Altmuhl from source to Danube
A beautiful ride through rural Bavaria. Rothenburg was the highlight of the places we visited, although we also enjoyed the small walled towns on the way. Regensburg, at the end of the tour, held less interest for us - perhaps we’d just seen too many medieval towns by then. We had 2 route plans: the first in German, took us from Rothenburg for the first 4 days cycling, and had excellent maps; the second covered the last 2 days, which was in English and had poor maps and directions. Both books also needs to be completely re-written as far as the information contained therein is concerned. There is too much local history (and I’m a local historian!). What the cyclist needs to know is where are the best places to stop, which places along the way must not be missed, where to picnic etc. We don’t need to a complete history of each village along the way instead.
