We loved our cycle trip along the Danube, the length (2 weeks) was perfect for us, though the daily distance variations (some days 30km, some days 90km) could have been more consistent. Luckily we were able to fill in the shorter cycling days with extra sightseeing. The train tickets were not well explained, and it was only by chance that we found them in our pack at the last minute. Clearer instructions required. (we used only one of the two train tickets, decided to cycle the other, as it felt like cheating if we didn’t cycle the whole way - this could be better resolved if we didn’t get so many short days planned)Our main issues were clarity of directions especially finding the hotels at the end of each day, and navigating our way out of the larger cities. better individual instructions would have been helpful. Also, we found the information on the daily journeys difficult to follow, and had to spend considerable time each night planning for the next day. We received information in four different formats ( the danube cycle book, which is difficult to follow) two separate e-mail attachments about 2 weeks prior to departure, then a further booklet in our pack at the first hotel. Each of these information sources had conflicting information, which was difficult to reconcile. I would recommend ONE ONLY information pack for a more seamless planning experience.Meeting Alex on the first night of the second stage was wonderful. Having his phone number in case of problems was very reassuring. Sadly we had no such backup for the first week, which in hindsight would have been helpful. I had an accident on day 1 which was only just manageable without support, especially as the following day was a public holiday and I could not access medical attention. The bike quality was not great. The bikes were very heavy, and my husbands bike was badly maintained. He was having difficulty keeping up with me, which is unusual. With a bike change in Vienna, this was resolved.Overall a great holiday, loved the cycling, the accomodation and the scenery. Directions could have been better.
