Route

Tour profile / level 2

The routes you cycle are flat to hilly, some climbs and descents, mostly on good natural trails or paved side roads.

Day 1: Faro

Individual arrival and check-in at your hotel in Faro.

Day 2: Faro – Vila Real – Tavira, approx. 34 km

In the morning delivery of the bikes, trip orientation and journey by train to Vila Real de Santo António (included). The bicycle tour starts following the river Guadiana, through pine forests, citrus and vine plantations, passing the historical village Cacela Velha with their white houses and fortress high up on steep cliffs with sheer drops down to the ocean below. From here, you have a spectacular view over the beauty of the national park “Ria Formosa”, a lagoon area with sandbanks, islands and waterways, all the way to Faro (60 km). The dune landscape offers breeding places for countless bird species and is a resort for rare species. Large mussel fields and the salt basins of the famous salt extraction "Flor de Sal” alternate. Via beautiful trails you will reach today´s milestone Tavira, also called “Little Venice of Portugal”: A historical town that has kept it’s typical character over the centuries. The varied history and the economic development are clearly shown in the construction of the buildings.
Tavira offers a very pleasant atmosphere, ideal for a stroll.

Day 3: Tavira – Faro, approx. 46 km

Enjoy the Atlantic see breeze while cycling through the small fishing village of Santa Luzia, Pedras del Rei and Fuseta. Whilst taking a rest watch the work of the fishermen in their multicolor painted boats. Afterwards you will visit Olhão with it’s still working fishing port, which is the biggest in the Algarve.  Just after entering Olhão visit the information park “Qiunta de Marim” and find out everything about the region. Enjoy a freshly made lunch in one of the many small restaurants with seafood and fish specialties along the harbor or the old town. Then you cycle on to Faro, the capital of the Algarve. Well-maintained cycling routes lead into the historical old town, entirely surrounded by a city wall and with many renovated buildings from the 16th and 18th century. Just a few steps away, past the marina and the pretty park “Manuel Bivar” you reach your day´s destination for the night…your hotel.

Day 4: Faro – Olhos de Água , approx. 42 km

Today’s tour starts by crossing of the railway line next to your hotel, and on well-paved roads you enter the nature reserve "Ria Formosa". You will ride through the lagoon area with the large saline ponds, where you find many different species of waterfowls. Then you ride past the holiday resorts “Quinta do Lago”, with impressive country residences and gardens, and "Vale do Lobo" that is one of Portugal’s largest, and most beautiful resorts. Along a beautiful bay and across the promenade of Quarteira, you will reach the marina in Vilamoura, one of Portugal’s largest private marinas. You continue around the harbour, and along the sandy beaches to Olhos de Água, a typical Portuguese village, and your destination for today, situated just before Albufeira.

Day 5: Olhos de Água – Portimão, approx. 57 km

Today you start with a ride through the town Albufeira. The former fishing village has turned into one of the most famous tourist centers in the Algarve. Cycling along the marina you will get to Galé, and continue on duck boards through the protected wetlands "Lagoa do Salgados" to the tourist resort “Armação de Pêra”. You cross the town on the busy beach promenade, and get to the chapel "A Nossa Srª da Rocha", that was built on a rock in the sea. You continue close to the cliffs all the way to Portimão. The next place is Benagil, a small cove surrounded by high cliffs, and then you head for the lighthouse in Alfanzina, located on the edge of the cliffs, and offering a magnificent view of the deep blue Atlantic Ocean. Going on you pass the coastal towns Carvoeiro and Ferragudo, and get to the river Arade. You cross the river over the old impressive bridge, continue to Portimão harbour, and on very good bike paths you reach today’s destination "Praia da Rocha".

Day 6: Portimão – Luz, approx. 45 km

The fishing village Alvor is the first visit of the day. Through winding streets you head into the wide delta of the Rio Alvor and all the way down to the Algarve´s largest oyster farm. Twice a day, when the tide is low, you can see the nets with oysters on stilts. The nice and long path leads you along the Algarve´s widest beach “Meia Praia”. Take the bridge over the city´s marina into the center of Lagos. Pass the old city walls, the slave market and the fort “Bandeira”. Ride along the most beautiful coastline the “Costa dOiro“ (Golden Coast) with the uniquely wave-shaped, golden rocks and pinnacles steeply rising up of the sea. Your destination for today will be Praia da Luz, a small, quiet seaside village with an old church and a fortress.

Day 7: Luz – Sagres, approx. 47 km

After the small villages of Burgau and Figueiras the path leads up and down across the landscape. Continue on slightly hilly terrain through farmers’ fields, pass a constant uphill and downhill on natural trails to relax in a small bay with a nice restaurant. Cycle to the small village Raposeira, famous by the home and chapel of Henry the Navigator. On it goes to Vila do Bispo through a barren plateau directly to the powerful lighthouse complex at Cabo de São Vicente, which is located on 60 m high cliffs. Feel a strong breeze by walking on top of those cliffs and enjoy the spectacular looks of the waves breaking against the rocks, beautiful and wild. Next, you ride on a beautiful coast road and reach your destination of this stage, Sagres. Prince Henry’s school of navigation, a legendary place, resulted in a breakthrough for Portuguese navigation.

Day 8: Sagres
