Fantastic and Varied Scenery
The Seeburg Hotel in Lucerne was a highlight. Great location, The trip we thought was rolling hills however the trip from Einsidl through to Lucerne was very steep, several walks, the first was described correctly as a 3km mountain side, the second near Lucerne was a 5km walk followed by a mountain bike descent in a forest over rocks tree roots and gravel.
The bikes were a bit heavy, robust, the mens bike didnt have front suspension which I think is a must on the chosen routes. The hotels were all good accommodations with great breakfasts. There was a definite orientation to organic and healthy food which was appreciated. The Einseidl hotel suffered from being on the main street near to a major monastery (very beautiful) that rang its bells (lots of bells) all night with a call to prayer at 5;25am lasting about 10 minutes, very loud and not much sleep. Konstanz was terrific and we should have spent more time there. If you get a chance the ferry trip to Meersburg was stunning. The cycle route took us through fantastic scenery and lots of beautiful towns and villages providing opportunity to look around and have coffee lunch etc. Switzerland is quite expensive which was pointe dout in the tour notes. Lots of opportunities to cool off in lakes and pools on the way. The bike collection was well organised with bike mechanics on hand to make sure everything was okay. The map book was in german which was useless for a non german speaking person. The distances although approx were a lot shorter than we actually rode. Not having cycle toured previously we had expectations of averaging about 16 to 18km per hour based on the training we had done on mountain bikes. The reality was more 10km per hour so some long days in the saddle, not a problem just a reality check.
All in all a fantastic trip with a great route and beautiful scenery and excellent accommodation. The organising of travel vouchers including side trips like the Rheinfell falls was excellent as we would not hae knoown of these things otherwise.
