Report Passau to Vienna September 22-28.
Accommodations and breakfasts were superb. We especially liked Gasthof Sylia. Superb! We would have liked dinner menus with more vegetables with the entrees...but I guess that isn’t the Austrian style.
The Rad Reisen tour book was deficient. The directions to the ferry to Gasthof Syliva were not clear...it should have been specific about which ferry to take to Gasthof Sylvia and that there was a shuttle. The ferryman at the first ferry saved us anguish by approaching us, telling us which ferry, and that there was a shuttle, and phoning the gasthof for us. nRR could have informed us. Don’t keep it a secret!
The information that there was a shuttle to Bad Kreusen didn’t need to be kept secret. After we learned the location of the Bad Kreusen lodging, we were very concerned about the steep uphill. No info from RR, so we phoned the gasthof and learned of the shuttle. RR could have told us that. Don’t keep it a secret!
In Linz the directions to the hotel were very confusing and perhaps wrong. If cyclists did not find the correct bike route there was no way to correct. The route signs in Linz are either not what RR used, or are not clear.
Going into Vienna, RR could have easily given correct directions to our hotel. Instead, the RR directions would have dumped us into central Vienna to guess a safe route. We spent 1 and 1/2 hours the night before sorting out the route only to discover that it was very easy. RR could have easily given us clear directions to our hotel (use the north bank trail and the Donauinsel to the bridge to the Park Inn.
Instead it seems that RR is lazy and does not adapt the directions to the accommodations for the group.
Interesting that reports on RR for cycling in nanother country also talk about lack of clear directions.
Thank you RR for letting us use the bicycles for our extra days in Vienna.
Austria and the Danube cycle path are wonderful! Fantastic!
