Great way to get an insight into an obscure and politically marginalised area of the world.
The local assistance was excellent. An initial misunderstanding led to one bedroom being provided on the first night, which meant my travelling companion (who is not my romantic partner) had to sleep on the sofa. After this, things were smooth.
Despite wifi being listed in all hotels, there was no wifi in Stonehouses or the Balci Plaza accommodation (only in the restaurant, which is a separate building). This was very inconvenient, as EU data roaming does not cover the ’occupied area’ (i.e. the soi-disant Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus).
Some hotels could be improved with small changes, like having bedside lamps to enable reading (Stonehouses only has a central main light).
The food was nice, but quite repetitive and there was restricted choice for all meals. Fish is very much recommended.
The hosts and people were exceptionally friendly and interesting. The country is not really a major tourist destination, so it is a good tour for people who want to get away from the crowd.
We were attacked by vicious dogs (3) which were loose at an isolated farm you pass on the road 22km into the last tour day (the distances for the last day were 5km short in the guide leaflet; these should be revised). Cyclists might be warned to carry a stick for defence as this could easily have resulted in injury (we had to cycle very fast to avoid being bitten).
The sun is strong (I go sunburn through my clothing!) and the hills are challenging for the gearing on the lady’s’ bike (which seemed to be geared differently to the man’s bike).
Three nights in Dipkarpas, one of which has no cycling, is too many -- the place is remote and there is one restaurant and nothing to do there (the beach is down a 500m hill and 5km away). We booked an excursion to Nicosia instead, which the local partner was pleased to arrange. This is highly recommended as Nicosia is very interested and has beautiful architecture.
