Bruges to Amsterdam August 2019
-I reported my height to Rad und Reisen as 155 cm. The bicycle from Dutch Bike Tours had a top bar that was a little too high for someone with short legs; a smaller frame or a step-through frame would have been better.
-Navigation of Dutch bicycle routes is more complicated than a Donau or Bodensee ride. At some time, the guide book maps and the GPS, my mobile and my compass all were used. The GPS is not good at complicated city intersections; all it can say is "beep beep beep--go back!".
-If I had been told at the beginning, "KNP or knooppunt numbers are the numbers of intersections, not the numbers of routes," it would have been an easier tour.
-If I had been told at the beginning, "The special Holland air valve has two caps; if you remove the metal cap, all air comes out instantly," it would have been a happier tour. Other people would have been happier, too.
-The bicycling day between Gouda and Amsterdam I knew would be long, so I followed the GPS with great attention, but still a temporary bridge closing on the Amstel added many kilometers to my day, for 10.5 hours in the saddle. I met a couple going the other way to Gouda, but at 1700 hours they had come only 28 km of the 78 km route, due to the difficulty of getting out of the city by following the GPS. Of course, in rural settings the GPS is a great help.
-There is a question in this feedback about on-site support; I don?t know what this means, but hotel keepers were helpful in directing me to bicycle shops when I had mechanical or valve trouble.
-In all, this was a good tour, but more work than I imagined.
