Porto to Lisbon: a windy ride!
We chose the last tour of the season so we knew the weather would be wintry in November.
Our bikes were excellent and the hotels were great quality. This is an interesting route but at times difficult to follow with the GPS and we often found ourselves on busy roads with traffic and rushing to get to the end point. Some of the route descriptions need updating and can be misleading.
The R and R info booklet is out of date, so be aware. The seaside towns are quiet in winter but the beaches are endless and would be wonderful in warmer weather. However, the cooler climate has a charm of its own, with moody skies and magnificent sunsets. It can be very wet in Portugal in winter so take protective clothing. We were really lucky and managed to dodge many of the showers.
This is a very windy ride! We rode into the wind for 5 days and it can start to wear you down! Day 4 is particularly difficult with a straight road for 20km, punctuated by steep hills, with a constant head wind. Óbidos is beautiful; try to make time to see the village inside the castle grounds. The transfers worked perfectly, as did the packed lunches. Worth ordering off season as it?s not always easy to find somewhere to eat. Lisbon is fascinating and worth a couple of days of sightseeing. Overall an excellent cycle tour, even in Winter!
