Danube Cycle Path Passau-Vienna / On the traces of the Habsburgs

Historic cities, grand buildings and the "Blue Danube"

Route

Tour profile / level 1

The cycling path is completely paved from one end to the other, flat, almost always directly along the riverbank and is also very suitable for beginners and children.

Day 1: Passau

Individual arrival. Use the remaining time for a city tour: go for a walk through the picturesque old part of town. Between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. bike hand over – for late arrivals on the next morning.

Day 2: Passau – Schlögener loop, approx. 41 km

Engelhartszell situated directly at the Danube, was the first stop in Austria for Sisi, the bride to-be. The beautiful Engelszell Monastery, Austria’s only Trappist cloister offers a pure rococo-church and the monks are experts in producing delicious liqueurs, which you should taste. Tip in Engelhartszell: The fluffy "Kaiserschmarren with Zwetschkenröster" (sugared pancake with raisins and hot plum mixture) – Gasthof Zum Goldenen Schiff. Amidst the "Schlögener Schlinge", we recommend walk (approx. 40 min.) up to the viewpoint Schlögen, and enjoy the magnificent view across the impressive Danube meander – you will be enchanted!

Day 3: Schlögener loop – Linz, approx. 56 km

Today swing yourselves into the saddle in direction to Linz. The Kürnberger forest situated just before Linz was the Habsburgs preferred district because of the wild wealth to the hunt. Stroll through the picturesque old town up to the Castle of Linz. By the way, Linz was a short time a ruling seat of the Habsburgs. Emperor Friedrich III lived his last years in the castle in Linz. His heart was buried in the Linz parish church where it has remained till this day. Tip in Linz: Enjoy the delicious nutty taste of the Linzer Torte.

Day 4: Linz – Strudengau, approx. 60 km

Shortly after Linz, concealed in the hilltops of the pre-alpine country, there is the splendid Augustinian Chorherr Monastery St. Florian, one of the largest baroque cloisters of Austria. The Monastery was an effect site of the composer Anton Bruckner whose grave is directly under the big organ in the basilica. 12 magnificently equipped imperial rooms in which empress Maria Theresia held once audience were available for the high visit of emperor and empress. During a guided tour of the monastery enjoy the atmosphere and splendour of the former days. A little bit further downstream the small town of Grein in the Strudengau region awaits you. This Danube segment was feared on grounds of the cliffs by the skippers. Even Emperor Franz Joseph and Sisi had to change the ship during the bridal journey as the imperial yacht leaked. Tip in Grein: Experience the historical "Batzlguglhupf" and enjoy at Cafè Schörgi a nut, cream cheese and "Powidl" mixtures placed in a yeast wrap.

Day 5: Strudengau– Nibelungengau, approx. 50 km

Hidden in the hills over the Danube there is the castle Artstetten, the last place of rest and former residence of the murdered Habsburg’s successor to the throne archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. The world cultural heritage Melk Abbey, is one of the loveliest and biggest baroque ensembles of Europe. Especially worth seeing within the construction are the splendid marble hall, the library and the church which you get to know during a guided tour. Culinary tip in Melk: Enjoy in the lovely inns on the route a delicious Wiener Schnitzel with parsley potatoes and cranberries.

Day 6: Nibelungengau – Krems/Grafenegg, approx. 38 km

Today you cycle past the sunny wine terraces through the UNESCO world heritage scenery until you reach Dürnstein, whose strikingly blue tower of the abbey already shines from far away. About the place sits the destroyed castle Dürnstein in whose walls Richard Löwenherz has waited for his releasing, enthrones. Numerous wine bars invite to a hold along the cycle path of the Danube. Tasty meals and high-class wines await you in this region. The navigation museum in Spitz shows interesting technology and history of the historical River Danube navigation, such as the ship-model which original was used by the Habsburg envoys on the trip for the negotiations with the Osmanen. The numerous fruit-trees along the bicycle path point to another specific feature of this sunny region – the Wachau Marille (apricot). Tip in the Wachau Valley: In the guesthouse Plankl we recommend to taste the fluffy sugared apricot dumpling, well known in the Bohemian-Austrian cuisine.

Day 7: Krems/Grafenegg – Vienna, aprox. 35 km + train ride Tulln-Klosterneuburg

This last stage will leads you to Tulln where you take a train to Kloserneuburg, where we recommend a visit of the former monastery. The rebuilding of the construction to a magnificent cloister residence initiated by Emperor Karl VI, however was not finalized after his death. The nearly car-free path along to the Donauinsel leads your way to Vienna, the capital of the Habsburg’s monarchy. Choose from its fullness of places of interest, which show a relation to this Imperious Dynasty: Castle Schönbrunn, Hofburg, Imperial Crypt, St. Stephan’s Cathedral and much more. During a guided tour in the Schönbrunn Palace and the beautiful park you will enjoy the imperial atmosphere of the Danube metropolis. Recommendation in Vienna: Enjoy a cup of typical Viennese coffee "Melange" and a fruity-sweet Sachertorte. You are interested in an evening concert in Vienna it is bookable for an extra surcharge.

Day 8: Vienna

Before leaving Vienna, make sure to visit the famous Naschmarkt (international foods/goods) and stop by the well-known leisure park "Prater". Extension at Vienna or train ride back to Passau (Season 1+2) or comfortable by bus (season 3).
