Holland & Flanders by Bike + Boat

Amsterdam - Bruges (or vice versa)

Route

Tour profile:

You follow flat, asphalted bike paths and side roads in traditional landscapes of small winding rivers and canals, polders, dykes and windmills. This tour is well-suited to those who have never taken a cycling holiday before as it is flat and predominantly traffic-free - you also have the option to skip the cycling and relax on board.

Tour Amsterdam - Bruges

Day 1: Amsterdam - Vianen, approx. 5 - 15 km
Individual arrival to Amsterdam. Embarkation 1- 1.30 p.m. Around 2 p.m. the ship leaves Amsterdam and sails to Vianen. After bike hand over you have time to explore the surroundings with by bike.

Day 2: Vianen - Dordrecht, approx. 56 km
After breakfast you will cycle a beautiful route to Schoonhoven, nicknamed the "Silver City", due to its renowned silver industry which began in the 17th century. Enjoy some time browsing through the silver shops. Your last stage of your cycle day you will take the "Waterbus" (not included; approx € 4,- per person). From Alblasserdam (near Kinderdijk) you will reach Dordrecht in approx. 10 minutes.

Day 3: Dordrecht - Willemstad/Tholen - Antwerp, approx. 34 - 43 km
As you enjoy a delicious breakfast the ship sails to Tholen. From here you begin with a cycle through the pretty forest area, "the Wouwse Plantage", via Bergen op Zoom with its fine 15th and 16th century buildings and south towards the  impressive Kreekraksluis (lock). The ship will dock at the end of the dam and from here sails through the remarkable port of Antwerp to the city. Antwerp is not only known as diamond city, but it is also where Rubens lived. You will find some of his paintings in the "Onze Lieve Vrouwe (our lady) Cathedral". After dinner: a visit to the beautiful old city centre.

Day 4: Antwerp - Dendermonde/Sint Amands, approx. 47 - 59 km
After breakfast you cycle out of the port to the Zeeschelde. You follow this beautiful but capricious tidal river upstream to Dendermonde. Pedal alongside a tidal river upstream and view the gorgeous landscapes of the Schelde. You will cycle either to St.-Amands or Dendermonde, both are friendly and welcoming  towns.

Day 5: Dendermonde/Sint Amands - Ghent, approx. 40 - 53 km
Bike tour from St.-Amands or by barge to Dendermonde. From Dendermonde the bike tour follows again the River Schelde in the direction of Ghent. Ghent, a lively university city, is your destination today. It is a place with an interesting history as it was founded in Roman times. Its convenient location at the confluence of the Leie and Schelde Rivers has brought it much by gone prosperity, culminating in the late 13th to early 14th centuries. In the afternoon you have the opportunity to discover the city some more, or to shop in the lively centre. The ship is docked at the lock in Merelbeke, a suburb of Ghent.

Day 6: Ghent - Bruges, approx. 45 km
Your last bike tour starts just outside the city and passes through the pleasant countryside of Western Flanders to Bruges. Bruges, also called the Venice of the North, maybe the most beautiful of all Flemish cities as its medieval quarter is almost completely intact. Bruges was at that time a centre of commerce and art. Dinner in a restaurant of your choice (not incl. - restaurant recommendations on board).

Day 7: Tour around Bruges to the North Sea, approx. 50 km
The final bike tour takes you to a quiet canal along where you’ll find lots of poplars, through an attractive polder landscape with traditional farm houses to the North Sea coast. A 12 km long sandy beach, numerous cafés and the attractive dune landscape of "Het Zwin" (an unique nature reserve) provide enough variety during your lunch break. Later, head back to the wonderful city of Bruges, where your boat will be docked again tonight.

Day 8: Bruges
