Rhine Bike Path by Bike & Boat

    Mainz - Basel / Basel - Mainz

    • Why is it so beautiful along the Rhine River? There certainly will be hundreds of possible answers to this question. One of these will be provided by this journey, on which you will  cross the French-German border several times.

Both  the French region of the Alsace and the German Black Forest area have much indulgence to offer, very fine wine and delicious plates.

Along with beautiful churches and romantic castles that are well worth a visit you will visit scenic towns with half-timbered medieval houses like Speyer, Kehl and Strasbourg.

      Tour profile:

The area is flat without any climbs. You bike on cycle paths, mostly along the shore of the lake, no major uphill stretches.

      Day 1: Mainz

Individual arrival in Mainz. There my be time to see the capital of Rheinland-Palatinate with its Saint Martin. Embarkation will be between 3 and 5 pm, the ship sails to Gernsheim, where you will spend the night.

      Day 2: Gernsheim – Mannheim-Speyer, approx. 30 - 60 km

In the morning, we will sail to Mannheim. In this lovely town, you will find one of the world‘s largest Baroque palaces. From Mannheim, either you cycle directly to Speyer or you make a detour via Heidelberg with its world-famous castle ruin. The cathedral in Speyer, today’s destination, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.

Day 3: Speyer – Leimersheim – Plittersdorf, approx. 40 km

Cycling through the Palatinate countryside you will reach the small town of Leimersheim, from where the MS ANDANTE will sail to Rastatt-Plittersdorf. Rastatt is a town characterized by its Baroque buildings and with two marvellous Baroque palaces. The Plittersdorf district is  close to the Nature Reserve  „Rastatter Rheinaue( Floodplains of the Rhine River)“, which belongs to the most important natural treasures  in the  administrative district of  Karlsruhe.

Day 4: Plittersdorf – Gambsheim – Kehl, approx. 40 km

Today you will set food on French soil when cycling to the village of Gambsheim in Alsace. From here, the ship sails to Kehl in the afternoon. Only the Rhine River separates the German town from Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace region. You can decide whether to enjoy the charm of the German small town Kehl or to have a guided tour in Strasbourg and see the famous historic squares like the Cathedral Square and the Suckling Pig Market as well as fascinating buildings like the Cathedral.

Day 5: Kehl - Strasbourg - Rhinau, approx. 40 km

A first destination for today’s leg is the village of Rhinau in France, situated amidst an amazing landscape shaped by the Rhine River. Here you leave the ship and continue the tour by bike, cycling towards the town of Breisach upon Rhine. From the rocky hill on which the Romanesque cathedral Saint Stephen towers over the town, you will have a wonderful view reaching from the Vosges Mountains over the Rhine valley to the Black Forest. You will also see the vineyards around the town, the wine and the sparkling wine from Breisach upon Rhine are world-famous.

      Day 6: Breisach – Colmar/Freiburg, approx. 70 km

Today, while the ship will moor in Breisach upon Rhine, you can decide to go for a cycle tour to Colmar, the unofficial capital of Alsatian wine, or to Freiburg im Breisgau, waiting for you with gorgeous buildings like the Freiburger Münster, a gothic minster cathedral, in the marvellous Old Town. After the tour, you will turn back to Breisach upon Rhine (return trip by train would be possible on your own account).

Day 7: Breisach Chalampé - Basel, approx. 40 km

The MS ANDANTE will cruise to the small French village of Chalampé. From here, you will cycle along the French bank of the River Rhine via Ottmarsheim and across the border to Switzerland until you will reach Basel. Enjoy your stay in this marvellous Swiss city in the tripoint between Germany-France-Switzerland. Not at all unjustified, Basel calls itself ”City of Gourmets” and has more than 20 restaurants with Gault Millau- or Michelin-valuation.

      Day 8: Basel

      Disebarkation after breakfast, individual departure.

      E-bike

By popular demand, we have now invested in a considerable number of e-bikes, much favoured by cyclists who love the great Outdoors, but prefer to let the bike take the strain.

With an electro bike every bike tour is a breeze! If you had few opportunities to cycle over the last weeks or if you are not sure concerning your fitness, but also with physical disabilities, every bike ride is a treat! The shiftable, low noise electric drive of our modern E-bike relieves you of some of the work and increases the pedal force up to 3 times ... So you can now book a bike tour together with cyclists who have different fitness level. Acclivity can be handled easily.
Please note that it won’t be possible to fix the handlebar bags on some of our E-Bikes.

      Additional information
Bicycle breakdowns can happen, also when bikes are well serviced and maintained, flats can be fixed by yourself. If there’s a difficult repair, you may call the local representative. Please don´t get any repairs done on the bike without informing the touroperator/local representative and their approval.

You will have the opportunity to take out an insurance for the bicycle (not for own bicycles) for the whole journey.

      Own Bikes
If you bring your own bicycle, please pay attention to the following aspects: You are personally responsible for your own bike on board and ashore. Protect your bike against theft on board, as well as on land with a lock. The bikes will be brought on board and from board by the crew. Due to the local conditions we cannot prevent scratches and damages on the bikes. Please understand that we cannot accept any liability. The bikes on board are exposed to weather conditions because the parking is not covered. Please bring along your own spare material and repair kit for your bike.
