B&S’s big bike adventure

Most everything Rad+Reisen and Dutch Bike Tours did was excellent. One bump in the road was Day 4. Our booklet said Hilton Antwerp Central Station, when we were actually checked into Radisson Blu. After a very tiring day, to be explained later, we finally found our bed for the night. That said, the route markings, at times, were terrible. Day 1, Amsterdam was the grand prize. What we were told should have been a 45 minute bike ride to clear the city limits turned into 2.5 hours of total frustration. What should have been a 72.7 km day stretched itself into 106.5 km. Signpost marker 53 doesn’t exist. We arrived at our hotel at 10:30 PM in the dark. Day 3, which should have been 64.8 km, stretched itself into 90.90 km. No. 41 & 49 signs don’t exist. Day 4 into Antwerp should have been 50.5 km, but clocked in at 67.4. We were so frustrated, when we saw "Antwerp 31 km" on a highway sign, we gave up on route markers and cycled the highway. Day 5, a 67.3 km ride turned into 83.63 km. We thought this was to be our best day timewise, until we found marker 81 doesn’t exist, so we took N19 into Leuven and arrived at the hotel at 7:10 PM. Our guesses didn’t work, we still pedaled too far by the time before a lady finally pointed us in the right direction. At marker 51, the trail was blocked off because of dike repair. Everyone around said to head into town, off the trail and go on the highway. By that time, we were so frustrated, we just went around the barrier, dragged our bikes up & down the dike and continued on the trail. Ditto when we got past the equipment repairing the dike on the other side. Day 6 was great, the daily total was 39 and we pedaled 38.23, simply because our new friends from Brazil had a GPS. To finally conclude the rant, the logistics of Rad+Reisen and Dutch Bike Tours was exceptional. Whoever is responsible for the trail markings in the Netherlands, Belgium and France should review their trail marking system with someone brighter then themselves. The knooppunt system is sadly in need of re-vitalizing. We’re two seniors with average mentality and exceptional eyesight. We carry a GPS that accurately gives us the distance pedaled, but wouldn’t know what to do with one that gives us directions, nor do we carry cell phones. Somewhere out there is a person who can advise the Trail Markers of a simpler and more accurate system. If someone were to ask us to rate the tour on a scale of 1 to 10, we would grade it a 3, simply because of the failings of the knooppunt system. It wasn’t pleasant arriving at our hotels in the dark or too late to enjoy the wonderful centres of the old historic towns along the way. We didn’t enjoy making U-turns and pedaling extra Km’s because of the marker failings. We met wonderful travelling companions, who worried about us not arriving in a timely manner and not enjoying their company at dinnertime. What should have been a 335.2 km bike ride turned into 432.62 km.
