Regions and towns along the Main Cycle Route

To cover the entire Main Cycle Route, you will need 11 days, with an average daily distance of 47 kilometers. But even if you only choose one section of the route, you will be fascinated by the wine country, the Fichtelgebirge mountains, and the Steigerwald forest.

A popular destination on the Main is the market town of Kulmbach. It delights visitors with its winding alleys and the fascinating German Tin Figure Museum in the Plassenburg Fortress. West of Kulmbach, below Steinhausen Castle, the source rivers of the Main converge. The confluence of the Red and White Main can be explored as an excursion destination.

Between the Franconian Forest and the Franconian Jura, your cycling tour takes you along well-signposted cycle paths and side roads via Bad Staffelstein to Bamberg. Bad Staffelstein is located in the so-called Garden of God, a region of great scenic beauty with many sacred sights.

Bamberg's old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, is characterized by numerous monumental buildings. The dominant structure in the old town is Bamberg Cathedral, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1004 by Emperor Henry II. Leaving Bamberg behind, after a few kilometers you will cross the border into “Wine Franconia.” The next major destination is the town of Haßfurt. Worthwhile sights to visit in the town include:

  • St. Kilian's Parish Church
  • St. Mary's Knights' Chapel
  • Holy Spirit Hospital Chapel

The sections from Haßfurt onwards are characterized by vineyards. Small, romantic wine-growing villages, extensive vineyards and orchards, and green Main meadows line the Main Cycle Route. The ride through the Volkach Main Loop is very scenic. In the shade of the riverine forests, the cycle path leads you directly along the Main to the vibrant city of Würzburg with its numerous Baroque sights. An impressive landmark of the city is the old Main Bridge with its 12 large sandstone figures, which has been a symbol of multicultural society for more than 200 years.

From Würzburg, you have the option of shortening the Main Cycle Tour by taking a train. On two wheels, you can choose between a flat and a hilly route. The Spessart metropolis of Aschaffenburg on the last stage is characterized by numerous historic buildings, monuments, and museums. Your journey ends in Mainz, where the Rhine and Main rivers meet.

Perfectly organized for carefree cycling

On your Main River bike tour, you don't have to worry about organizational matters. We take care of luggage transport between the stage destinations and arrange accommodation. A service hotline that is available around the clock, maps, GPS data, and other information material are of course also included. You can choose to cycle with a rental bike or your own bike. Especially for longer distances, we recommend renting one of our e-bikes – for a permanent tailwind.

Our cycle paths along the Main vary in length and have few inclines. On the “Main by Bike+Boat” trip, you can combine your bike tour with the advantages of a river cruise. As part of our bike tours in Germany, we also offer a wide range of round trips and centre based tours, such as the 7-day Bamberg Star Tour.

Conclusion: sharpen your gaze and enjoy being active

Cycling tours are very popular, especially e-bike tours, which are becoming increasingly popular. With electric assistance, cycling tours are also easy to manage for non-competitive athletes. Slow travel on two wheels provides a completely new vacation experience and allows travelers to discover beautiful things along the way that they would have carelessly rushed past in a car.
