Tauern Cycle Path – Cycling in Austria
Want to marvel at Alpine giants up to three thousand meters high without getting out of breath? Book a multi-day cycling tour along the Tauern Cycle Path and enjoy this unusual opportunity, passing through Salzburg, one of Europe's most beautiful cities!
The Tauern Cycle Path runs north of the Hohe Tauern, the mountain range from which it takes its name. Because the flanks of the Großglockner, the Steinernes Meer and the Untersberg are touched but not crossed, the long-distance cycle path is particularly family-friendly. Nature presents itself as if painted, showing its almost supernatural beauty. Lush alpine pastures, bizarre rock peaks, tranquil villages, and narrow valleys accompany the three different routes that cyclists can choose from. Whether you cycle from ...
is up to your personal preferences. The scenic impressions are fantastic everywhere!
On the Tauern Cycle Path
Continuously signposted paths, varied sections with different surfaces, and all kinds of interesting destinations – the Austrian-Bavarian long-distance cycle path promises comfortable cycling paired with spectacular views. When you get on your bike in Krimml, you will immediately be greeted by the first visual treat: the Krimml Waterfalls. The water masses thunder and steam as they plunge 385 meters into the depths, accompanying the bike path through the Hohe Tauern National Park with a roar. Those who have opted for the Krimml-Salzburg variant turn off in Kaprun towards St. Johann im Pongau and catch a glimpse of the highest mountain in the Alpine republic, the 3798-meter-high Großglockner. The alternative route leads via the Kleine Deutsche Eck and thus touches on the Berchtesgadener Land. Salt is still mined in the spa town of Bad Reichenhall – the Alte Saline tells the story of the “white gold.”
Eye-catchers along the way
Salzburg is the hub of the Tauern Cycle Route, which is why all the tour options on offer lead to the city of Mozart. Hohensalzburg Castle, the cathedral, the Festspielhaus, Mirabell Palace, and the water features in the enchanting gardens of Hellbrunn are all on the sightseeing program. Those who choose to continue the tour to Passau in Lower Bavaria will reach the picturesque border town of Laufen shortly after Salzburg. The pretty Silent Night Chapel is hidden away on the Austrian banks of the Salzach. Downstream, Hallein nestles against the rushing waters. Atmospheric old town alleys and the exciting Celtic Museum provide entertainment. If vacationers take the route via St. Johann, they will soon come across Hohenwerfen Fortress. The valley between Hochkönig and the Tennen and Hagen mountains is only a few hundred meters wide here and can be seen perfectly from the battlements of the medieval castle.
The Tauern Cycle Path – a destination for discerning connoisseurs
The difference in altitude between Krimml and Passau is only 750 meters, so the focus of this long-distance cycle path is on taking in the landscapes rather than the sporting challenge. A unique opportunity that cyclists won't find anywhere else in the Alps! For cycling enthusiasts looking for more of these picturesque experiences, the long-distance cycle routes in Germany also offer unforgettable landscapes and adventures.
