Tauern Bike Path: Salzburg - Salzburg

Trip along the Saalach and Salzach Rivers

    • The route is almost entirely on an asphalt bike path or small side roads and runs through a deep, wide mountain valley in the Alps.

The bicycle tour passes along the foothills of majestic mountains and the rivers Salzach and Saalach. Discover the numerous cultural sights and untouched nature of one of Austria´s most beautiful regions. Enjoy the flair of Salzburg and be impressed by the charm of its surroundings.

      Tour profile / Level 2

Mostly flat, some uphill stretches and soft hills. On bike paths and quiet side roads.

      Day 1: Salzburg

      Individual arrival.

Day 2: Salzburg - Lofer, approx. 49 km

Upstream – but only with low gradients you cycle from Salzburg along the Saalach into the little German corner (“kleine deutsche Eck”) to Bad Reichenhall. Here you visit the old saline with the salt museum. You are approching more and more your today’s destination Lofer with its traditional and welcoming inns.

      Day 3: Lofer - Zell am See/Kaprun/Piesendorf, approx. 46 - 58 km

Right through the “Stony Sea” it first goes over the basin valley of Saalfelden with its watchable castle Ritzen and then the shore of the lake Zeller See further to the health resort Kaprun, which lies at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn. The lake Zeller See, in the shadow of the Kitzsteinhorn and Großglockner, invites you to a relaxing bathing experience. Easy cycling through the valley of the “Stone Sea” mountain range to the Saalfelden basin. Then along the shore of Lake Zell to Kaprun, at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn Mountain.

      Day 4: Zell am See/Kaprun/Piesendorf - Krimml - Zell am See/Kaprun/Piesendorf, approx. 53 - 65 km

This cycling day starts with a train ride to Krimml. From there it is only 3 km to the largest waterfalls in Europe, the famous Krimmler waterfalls (admission is included in the price). The return drive per bike takes you through the Pinzgau from village to village and in the background soars the snow covered “three thousand”-mountain: Großvenediger, Großglockner and Kitzsteinhorn.

      Day 5: Zell am See/Kaprun/Piesendorf - St. Johann im Pongau/Bischofshofen, approx. 41 - 55 km

Passing the lake Zeller See, you cycle via Bruck at the foot of the Großglockner through the Salzach valley via Taxenbach to St. Johann. A detour to the impressive Liechtenstein Gorge, the most important gorge in the Eastern Alps (huge natural spectacle with 50 cm high waterfalls at the end of the gorge), is possible. Accommodation in St. Johann or Bischofshofen.

      Day 6: St. Johann im Pongau/Bischofshofen - Salzburg, approx. 52 - 61 km

Passing the fortress Hohenwerfen you cycle slightly uphill to the Pass Lueg, where an inn invites you to rest. After a wonderful descent you reach Golling and Hallein. Quickly your are now in Salzburg, where you can enjoy the remainder of the day.

    • Bicycles inclusive panniers:

      Unisex bike with Nuvinci transmission

The NuVinci CVT special gear system (correspond to a 27 speed bike) uses a set of rotating balls and also tilting balls in a transmission. Tilting the balls changes their contact diameters and varies the speed ratio. As a result, the NuVinci CVT system offers seamless and continuous transition to any ratio within its range.

The offered bikes are touring bikes with an aluminium frame and kitted with responsive brakes and gears. Plus: comfort gel saddles, flat-palmed grips, Schwalbe Marathon anti-puncture tyres. All bikes are equipped with a pannier (saddle bag) and a handlebar bag/per room.

      E-bike

By popular demand, we have now invested in a considerable number of e-bikes, much favoured by cyclists who love the great Outdoors, but prefer to let the bike take the strain.

With an electro bike every bike tour is a breeze! If you had few opportunities to cycle over the last weeks or if you are not sure concerning your fitness, but also with physical disabilities, every bike ride is a treat! The shiftable, low noise electric drive of our modern E-bike relieves you of some of the work and increases the pedal force up to 3 times ... So you can now book a bike tour together with cyclists who have different fitness level. Acclivity can be handled easily.

      Private bicycles

You are welcome to bring your own bicycle. This is adapted especially to your needs. Do not forget to bring a repair kit with all necessary tools such as: keys, reserve tube and lock. Please check your own bicycle for operability upon arrival.
