Cycling tours in Cyprus: one island, many sights

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus looks back on a unique and very eventful past, from which numerous cultural monuments have survived. A cycling tour in Cyprus is probably one of the most exciting ways to experience Cyprus up close and to be culturally and physically active on vacation.

Discover ancient history by bike

A cycling tour in Cyprus offers the opportunity to visit numerous ancient buildings. The island is characterized by great diversity, both in terms of landscape and topography. Between the various archaeological sites, there are some flat coastal sections, but also some hilly stretches. Inland, there are also higher mountains, which are particularly interesting for mountain bikers.

A cycling tour in Cyprus usually includes quaint fishing villages, various agricultural areas, and beautiful beaches. It is easy to visit both the southern and northern parts of the island. The island’s main attractions include:

  • the city of Famagusta with its medieval old town
  • the Crusader castle in Kantara
  • the ancient archaeological site of Salamis
  • the Barnabas Monastery
  • the royal tombs in the west of the island

A tour of Cyprus can be done on bike paths and side roads as well as quiet coastal routes, except for the direct entrance to the city of Famagusta. The differences in altitude are moderate in some places, but sometimes a little more challenging.

Experience Cyprus actively on a Cyprus bike tour

There are about 50 kilometers between Famagusta and Bogaz, a charming stage that leads to the famous royal tombs and Barnabas Monastery. The north of the island is particularly interesting from a historical and tourist point of view, as the archaeological site of Salamis is also located north of Famagusta by the sea. Here in the Turkish part of the island, there are particularly many flowering acacia trees in spring, which transform the landscape into a sea of yellow flowers. The village of Bogaz itself is known for its delicious fish dishes.

The south coast lies entirely in the independent part of Cyprus. The route between Golden Beach and Cape Andreas is one of the most attractive coastal stages. These 60 kilometers are fairly flat and lead partly past beautiful sandy beaches. Every now and then you can see wild donkeys grazing in the meadows. Finally, there is a lonely monastery at Cape Andreas. Between Dipkarpaz and Kumyali there are 35 kilometers that lead through a landscape with numerous sleepy villages.

Ruins and mountain landscapes on a cycling tour in Cyprus

On any cycling tour through Cyprus, the stage between Kumyali and Kalica is a highlight. This route of about 40 kilometers is one of the more challenging ones because it leads through the Kyrenia Mountains on the north coast, where you have to overcome at least 400 meters of elevation gain. However, the mountain landscape makes up for all the exertion, as the views of the coast and the surrounding mountains are simply the highlight of any cycling tour in Cyprus. It is a good idea to choose accommodation on the beach, as there are many pretty guesthouses and hotels. The journey then continues to Girne or Kyrenia, 60 kilometers away. It is a port city whose center is full of historic buildings.

Conclusion: The island for cyclists and explorers

Cyprus is perfect for cycling trips because the island is small enough to cover in a week, yet large enough to offer a new cultural or natural highlight every day. Beaches, ruined cities, and historic old towns with traditional fish restaurants invite you to relax after hours on the bike. A cycling tour in Cyprus offers plenty of variety and just the right mix of culture, nature, and activity.
