Cycling tours in Luxembourg

As one of the smallest countries in Europe, Luxembourg is one of the lesser-known tourist destinations. However, this country is particularly well suited to modern cycling tourism, as the paths are well developed and Luxembourg is characterized by an astonishing variety of landscapes.

Discover Luxembourg and its neighboring countries

Luxembourg may be a small country, but cycling tours in Luxembourg are nevertheless more than varied. The city of Luxembourg is characterized by an interesting mix of historic old town and modern European quarter. The city center, with its elegant shopping mile and the Grand Duke’s palace, is only a few minutes by bike from the skyscrapers and modern architecture of the Plateau du Kirchberg.

The north of the country is characterized by lakes and nature and is also extremely hilly, where the landscape merges into the Luxembourg Ardennes. The south of the country is rather flat and was once a center of steel processing. Cycling tours in Luxembourg can be combined perfectly with detours to Germany or France.

Viez and wine in Saarland

Cycling tours in Luxembourg offer the perfect opportunity for a detour to Germany. Well-developed cycle paths lead along the Moselle and later along the Saar towards the north. From Saverne via Metz, the route continues towards Saarland, where the state capital Saarbrücken and the Völklinger Hütte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the form of a former ironworks, await visitors. In the small town of Mettlach, the Saar Loop surprises visitors as one of the most beautiful natural monuments in Saarland.

Via Merzig, where Viez, a local apple wine, is brewed, the route continues to the Moselle and thus to Germany’s oldest wine region. Through the vineyards, the route continues north along the Moselle to Trier, Germany’s oldest city. The market square, dominated by medieval buildings, and Trier Cathedral are highlights of the city center, where you can also see the Porta Nigra, a monument from Roman times. From there, it is only about 55 kilometers to Luxembourg City – a stage that makes cycling tours in Luxembourg so interesting, because here it becomes a little hillier.

Tri-border area and European capital

Cycling tours in Luxembourg are most enjoyable when combined with stops in France and Germany. In Luxembourg, be sure to explore the old town, the modern European quarter, and the diverse landscapes. France and Germany offer traditional wine-growing regions, world heritage sites, and an exciting mix of German and French culture in Alsace, Lorraine, and Saarland, all three of which have belonged to both countries at some point in history.
