This bike tour takes you through the green countryside from the Kempen to the abbey of Westmalle. The Trappist Abbey of Westmalle was founded in 1794 by monks from the French Abbey of Notre Dame de la Grande Trappe next to Soligny. These monks were fleeing because of the unfavorable regligious climate that prevailed at that time in France. The bishop of Antwerp gave the monks a farm. There, the monks had started a community and year after year this community grews and around 1900 they started with the construction of today’s abbey. The abbey has been brewing beer since 1856. The famous beer Westmalle Tripel is brewed since 1934. Unfortunately you can not visit the abbey but you can taste the beer and the cheese in a local restaurant.

This tour leads you to Lier. Attractions in Lier are the Beguinage, Grote Markt and the ’Zimmertoren’. If you want you can cycle to Mechelen. Mechelen was in the 16th century, the political capital of the so-called ’landing land’. Over 300 historic buildings recall this glory period of Mechelen. Be sure to visit the Saint Rombout Cathedral with its fantastic overview of the region, the palaces of Margaretha of York and Margaretha of Austria, as well as the Market Square and the Beguinage.
