Venice - Istria

Along the Adriatic Coast, 1 beach - 3 countries

Route

Tour profile: Level 1-2

The cycle trip to Istria is flat until shortly before Trieste, then it continues slight hilly until Poreč. The tour is suitable for children from 14 years on.

Day 1: Venice (main land)

Individual arrival at the hotel on the mainland of Venice from where the tour will commence. The "Serenissima" with all its splendid buildings invites to a primary inspection. The city of Venice has a well organised and easily accessible public transport system. (bus or train stop near to the hotel)

Day 2: Venice/Mestre (main land) – Jesolo/Caorle, approx. 30 - 80 km

This day you have two possibilities, either you cycle along the dam and the lagoon to Venice or you cycle through the back-country following the river Sile to reach Jesolo/Caorle. The first few kilometres/miles in the lagoon city are carried out by bicycle. Then you take a ferry across to Punta Sabbioni (ticket not included in the "package-price"). On the endless beaches at Litorale di Cavallino, a spit of land in the north of the lagoon, the route is lined by numerous fishing boats and souvenir stalls city and the surrounding islands. On the way to Jesolo one can hardly resist the opportunity to have a refreshing dip into the cool wet. You spend the night in Jesolo or Caorle.

Day 3: Jesolo/Caorle – Concordia Sagittara/ Portogruaro, approx. 30 - 50 km

Along the coast and passed the last fishermen’s cottages, you cycle through wonderful, small seaside resorts with historical centres. On reaching few destinations, it signifies leaving the sea for a while as the direction is dictated by the mainland in the direction of the Julian Alps on the horizon. During the spring period of the Venetian Republic, it was convenient for the interior to encompass Portogruaro as a very important River harbour in the "Serenissima". Even today there are those in Portogruaro who regard their city as the most Venetian. They are not entirely incorrect when you look at the Venetian embellishments of the magnificent buildings and places.

Day 4: Concordia Sagittaria/Portogruaro– Aquileia/Grado, approx. 45 - 65 km

Besides the beaches of the Adriatic, there is a lot to discover; ruins of former Roman cities, ancient churches and lonely landscapes on the edge of the lagoon. Visiting Aquileia, once a large city of the Roman Empire, excavations of the Roman city can be seen in the open-air-site and in two museums. As an alternative you can shorten the first part of the tour by train to Latisana. (not incl.) If you book Category A you take the boat from Marano to Lagunare until short before Aquileia. (possible only in season 3)

Day 5: Aquileia/Grado – Trieste, approx. 40 km - 70 km

Today’s stages continues through the hinterland of Trieste, soaked in a meagre barren landscape of rocky caverns before returning to the sea and a coastline of unique beauty. Where the elevated plateaus plunge into the deep blue water and the white precipices stand upright jutting towards the heavens; and then the coastal road follows through suggestive resorts like Duino, Sistiana, Miramare, and Barcola. You should take time to visit the romantic castle of Miramare above the Bay of Grignano situated in the middle of a beautiful park in which a multiplicity of more the 2000 plants prosper. Above the Gulf of Trieste, entrenched is a city bearing the same name, once a harbour metropolis of the Habsburgs Empire and where you will be spending the night. Possiblity to shorten the stage after 40 km by train to Trieste. (not incl.)

Day 6: Trieste – Piran/Portorož, approx. 35 - 65 km

Only after a few kilometres/miles today, we take leave of Italy. In Slovenia, the route continues predominantly on cycle paths through well-known seaside resorts like Koper (Capodistria) and Izola (Isola d’ Istria), to Piran (Pirano) or to Portorož (Portorose), a spa resort on the Slovenian Riviera. There is a little bit longer alternative of this stage which passes along the valley "Rosandra" in the back country. Possiblity to shorten the stage by using the ferry from Trieste to Muggia. (not incl.)

Day 7: Piran/Portorož – Poreč, approx. 70 km

Cycling past the salt gardens of Secovlje where on enormous surfaces and through natural vaporisation, sea salt is recovered, you cross over the border into Croatia. For a distance, the route goes through the Croatian part of Istria, the largest peninsular on the Adriatic with its slightly hilly terrain on the way to Porec, the most important coastal city on the west coast of Istria. It is certainly worth a visit to Euphrasian-Basilica which has been taken up by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Day 8: Poreč

Individual trip home or extended stay at Poreč. If you return back to Venice by ferry (not incl., for supplement) you can sit back and review again the saddled distance covered as the boat continues on route to the lagoon city.

    TRANSFER

Transfer by ferry* All ferry rates published on our website has been carefully researched. We would like to point out that the prices on our website are possibly higher than the prices of the operator of ferries Venezialines. We therefore recommend to book directly through  Venezialines to avoid any misunderstandings.

For transfer reservation by ferry passport details are required from each participant.

We do NOT suggest you to bring your own bikes in case you want to reserve the return cruise by ferry. Rental bikes can be left in the hotel in Poec whereas your own bikes have to be transported via ferry back to Venice. The return journey from the port in Venice / Terminal San Basilio to Venice tran station, Venice mainland or Venice airport with own bikes and luggage is very uncomfortable.

*If the ferry will be cancelled (technical problems, logistic reasons,...) there will be organized a transfer by bus - the reserved ferry ticket cannot be refunded and is not possible to complain compensation.

Transfer from the harbour in Venice to the first hotel: public taxi approx. EUR 45 - EUR 55. The transfer can be booked during the briefing at the beginning of the tour start. Payment directly to the taxi driver in cash.

Transfer by taxi from Porec to Venice cost approx. € 65 - 75 per person, min. 4 pax. up on request.

Very beautiful route that for the most part was ridiculously easy cycling. The ease of cycling was due to how flat the country side is. The last two days were more difficult to to the climb necessary to get to Porec...S.S. 10/18

    Venice to Poréc

It was a good trip. We loved the Istrian countryside and the sea coast. Our concerns were: 1. All the rides were 60km+ with the exception of the ride into Portoroz. That was not clear from the description. It appeared there were different ride choices. ...

    Route stickers.

Excellent support and great stickers to show the route at each turn. Great maps. Route in Croatia (last day) from Tar was posted with route stickers which took us to Santa Marina instead of to Poreč. Otherwise, route stickers were very helpful.

A fun ride along the Adriatic coast

We are a group of eight that combined two of the standard tours and rode from Venice to Pula. We had great time swimming in the sea, staying at resort hotels, tasting the local food and wine and visiting the cities along the way. The equipment worked ...

    Venice to Pula Bike Ride

Another great trip with Rad and Reisen (#6 for me). The equipment, route, and coordination were excellent. Two of the hotels could have been better and two hotels did not have the confirmation of a paid dinner but overall, another great experience.
