Provence home-based tour

Discover one of the most beautiful areas of Southern France...

Route

Tour profile / level 2

The route is mostly flat, with some hilly parts and stretches. The cycle paths are mostly paved but a good condition is definately good. Mostly you cycle on side roads, some times on cycle paths and main roads.

Day 1: Orange

Individual arrival to Orange. Use the day to discover the city of Orange while walking through the city in the evening.

Tour routings / route suggestions

You can find our suggestions for the nicest bike tours in the surroundings below. It is up to you, which ones you choose and combine...or if you do something completely different. In your travel documents you will find further information about the region and tipps and tricks for your cycle tour!

Route 1: Bédarrides - Châteauneuf du Pape, approx. 43 km

The person in charge of your bicycles will deliver them to you at the hotel on the morning after your arrival. The day tour will follow small roads on an easy terrain and it will be marked with our own arrows. The first stops are the country towns Jonquières and Bédarrides, with many shops, cafes and restaurants. If you wish to have something light and local, buy some food and drinks you can then eat at the picnic area by the roman bridge at Bédarrides. The next town is called Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and it is here, in the 1300s, the Pope used to get his wine when he stayed in Avignon. Wonderful wine is still made here today and there will be many opportunities to visit wine producers and wine shops on the way.

Route 2: Beaumes de Venise und Vacqueyras, approx. 52 km

Today’s cycling route takes you east towards the wine areas of Beaumes-de-Venise and Vacqueyras. Beaumes-de-Venise produces red wine and noble dessert white wine with Muscat grapes. In Vacqueyras they specialize in red wine. Both country towns have small shops, restaurants, cafes and wine shops. The terrain is relatively easy, but does go slightly uphill before Beaumes-de-Venise.

Route 3: Avignon, approx. 31 km (Attention - no round trip!)

This tour takes you to Avignon. On the way there, you will go through the small towns of Caderousse, Roquemaure og Villeneuve-les-Avignon, where you will have a chance for refreshments and to enjoy the sights. At the end of the tour you will cycle into Avignon, where you can visit the famous unfinished bridge Pont d’Avignon (you might remember the song ‘Sur le pont d’Avignon, on y danse, on y danse..’?) and the fantastic palace of the Pope from the 1300s. The bridge was opened in 1184 and is actually called Pont Saint Benezet. Today only a part of the bridge remains. To get back to Orange, you will have to take a local train from the railway station in Avignon, taking the bike with you. Alternatively, should you feel particularly energetic that day, you can cycle the same way back.

Route 4: Uchaux und Sérignan du Comtat, approx. 28 km

The day’s leg takes you up to the wooded areas north of Orange. The landscape is barer than the other legs, but the terrain is easy with no significant hills. We recommend the country town of Sérignan-du-Comtat for lunch. Here you will find the statue of the scientist Jean-Henry Fabre (1823-1915) in front of the town hall and you can visit a museum in his old house. Jean-Henry Fabre’s field of interest was insects. His great scientific accomplishment is that he managed to document the importance of insects for flowers. Moreover, he was a poet and a humanist.

Route 5: Camaret - Sainte Cécile les Vignes, approx. 46 km

Flat and varied tour which takes you through the cosy country towns of Camaret-sur-Aigues with its beautiful fort walls, Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes and Rochegude. We recommend taking this tour on a Saturday morning, so that you can also enjoy the little weekly provençal market in Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes.

Day 4/5/6/7/8: Orange

Individual departure from Orange. Look back at some wonderful holidays...

A very nice area for short and flexible trip.

We truly enjoyed biking through the vineyards and fields around Orange. It was beautiful. This is our 4th cycling trip in Europe with Rad+Reisen affiliates, but for us was the shortest and most focused on one area. Unlike previous trips and this trip ...
