Bike + Sail Frisian Sea

Wind, Salt & a Feeling of freedom

Route

Tour profile:

The vast amount of available cycling routes shows that the Netherlands are a paradise for cyclists. The routes are flat and can be decreed easy.

Day 1: Enkhuizen

Individual arrival and embarkation from 2 p.m. near the beautiful centre of Enkhuizen and close to the railway station. The skipper will join you for an aperitif and explain many things worth knowing about the journey, the ship and also about safety measures to be taken on board.

Day 2: Enkhuizen – Medemblik – Den Oever, approx. 24 - 37 km

Today the ship sails from Enkhuizen to Den Oever. You can stay on board and sail over the IJsselmeer or you can grab a bike and start your first cycling tour along the IJsselmeer coast through the beautiful polder-landscape via Medemblik. After the bike tour the ship will sail further to Den Oever. Depending on the weather in the evening the ship will sail across the Wadden Sea to the Island of Texel.

Day 3: Texel, round tour from Oudeschild, approx. 40 - 46 km

The island of Texel has a varied scenery and picturesque villages. Explore the largest of the Dutch North Sea islands on a round-trip cycling tour. Our tip: Use the well sign-posted Thijsse-route (about 40 km) and visit some villages, the seal sanctuary station EcoMare and the nice traditional beer brewery.

Day 4: Island of Texel - Island of Terschelling, sailing day (5 - 6 hours)

Today the ship will sail to the island of Terschelling, if tide and weather are good. You will manoeuvre through the sandbanks of the Wadden Sea and when you are lucky you will see seals lying to rest on a sandbank. In the afternoon the ship will arrive on Terschelling.

Day 5: Terschelling: explore the island by bike - Harlingen approx. 70 km

Terschelling offers a lot: nature and culture, 70 km cycling tracks and 4 beautiful villages. West-Terschelling is the largest village on the island with nice shops and pubs. The landmark of the island can already be seen well from a distance, the 400 year old light-house "Brandaris". Also worth seeing is the heath land "Boschplaat". It captivates with its mud, beaches and dunes. You might even spot a number of ducks, black-winged stilts and large colonies of spoonbills and great black-backed gulls.

Day 6: Island of Terschelling - Harlingen - Franeker - Makkum (approx. 48 - 58 km)

Today the ship sails to Harlingen, the outstanding town of Friesland. Across Franeker with its popular planetarium from Eise Eisinga, you will cycle through the beautiful and roomy Frisian landscape with its tiny villages to Makkum. If you´re in to take the long trip, you can come to Bolsward, one of the eleven Frisian towns.

Day 7: Vlieland or Province of Friesland - sailing back to Enkhuizen (approx. 32 - 49 km)

Today you take your bike and ride from Makkum to Stavoren. The route passes the old trading town Hindeloopen where the famous painting comes from. Also, there is the first Frisian iceskate museum. The long tour crosses many Frisian lakes and shows a different scenery. In Stavoren, you take your ship and sail to Enkhuizen.

Day 8: Enkhuizen

Disembarkation by 09:30 am. A beautiful journey full of new experiences has come to an end.

    Bicycle

    Bicycles inclusive panniers

7-speed-bikes UNISEX with back pedal brake
The bicycles are Gazelle Esprit C7 bicycles with 7-speed hub gear and hand brakes. All bicycles have a comfortable Selle Royal saddle (height adjustable), a lock on the frame and pannier bag.

    E-bike | Electrical bikes | Pedelecs
The E-Bikes are Gazelle Orange C330 HMB E-bikes with step less hub gears, front suspension and hand brakes. The crank engine offers 4 levels of support. The E-bikes have a comfortable Selle Royal saddle with saddle suspension, a lock on the frame and a pannier bag. Because of the limited number of E-bikes, early booking of an E-bike is strongly recommended.

Note: E-bikes are a great development, but should be - due to their driving characteristics (high weight + high speed) - booked only by very safe and experienced cyclists with a very good sense of balance. Not suitable are electric bikes for people who rarely ride a bicycle

    Breakdowns
Bicycle breakdowns can happen, also when bikes are well serviced and maintained, flats can be fixed by yourself. If there’s a difficult repair, you may call the local representative. Please don´t get any repairs done on the bike without informing the touroperator/local representative and their approval.
You will have the opportunity to take out an insurance for the bicycle (not for own bicycles) for the whole journey.

    Own Bikes
If you bring your own bicycle, please pay attention to the following aspects: You are personally responsible for your own bike on board and ashore. Protect your bike against theft on board, as well as on land with a lock. The bikes will be brought on board and from board by the crew. Due to the local conditions we cannot prevent scratches and damages on the bikes. Please understand that we cannot accept any liability. The bikes on board are exposed to weather conditions because the parking is not covered. Please bring along your own spare material and repair kit for your bike.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A Sail & Bike tour is an adventure: the only thing which is really fixed on this cruise is the departure and arrival harbour Enkhuizen. The sailing routes to be taken depend largely on wind and weather forecast. The skipper will determine from day to day the exact sailing schedule and discuss the possibilities with the guests. The skipper and his crew will do everything they can to offer you the program as planned so you can enjoy a fascinating week with a variety of activities, nature and culture, but it is possible that the departure and sailing times and/or the order of the program has to be changed. Various parts of the tour will be sailed. All distances are "approximate distances" of recommended bike tours. If a guest does not want to cycle one day, she/he can skip the bike tour and relax on board while cruising to the next harbour. Program + details barring changes as a result of nautical, technical or meteorological reasons.

Diet: (i.e.: lactosefree, glutenfree) possible on request and for an extra charge. Must be booked at least 14 days prior to departure.
