Hochwasser Tour of the Danube

The flooding along the Danube route we were scheduled to travel made for some concern that the tour would not take place. After an email I sent to Klaus, he assured me that the route and the hotel in Passau were in operation. Taking the ICE from Hamburg via Nuremberg to Passau on June 8 was complicated between Nuremberg and Regensberg by a mechanical piece flying past my window and then the train stopping on an countryside stretch of track. We finally arrived in Passau about three hours late in pouring rain. The taxi driver did not deliver me to the real entrance of the Hotel Koenig, instead directing me to some steps leading down to the river level and much mud. After not finding any entrance I called the phone number of the hotel and found out that I had to climb back up the steps and go to the other side of the hotel where the upstairs entrance was to be found. The hotel persons were very friendly but my clothes and luggage were very wet and somewhat muddy after that start to the bike tour. The Bike Pick-Up in Passau went quite well after I pointed out that the first bike given to me to try out in the parking lot had a defective gear shifter. I then got a much better bike which I used for the tour, after the bike person installed a KM odometer. The new luggage policy limiting the pickup to only one piece compared to the two-piece policy on last June’s Vienna-Budapest tour required me to put many more items into the pannier and added much weight to the bike. My carry-on suitcase was successfully forwarded to each hotel but the additional weight on my bike made for some fatigue on the route, especially trying to ride up hill to the Landgasthof Winter. I am probably at fault for not carefully reading the instructions before the trip, but the reduced luggage service did not it more difficult to pack and carry the pannier. Some parts of the Donau Radweg were affected by Hochwasser requiring some detours. A rockslide near Melk closed off the route indicated on the Guide but with the benefit of being able to see the Venus of Willendorf in Willendorf. The other part of the route which caused some confusion was the route indicated in the Guide at Greifenstein - I ended up getting confused about how to ride over the Kraftwerk. I rode instead on the Left Bank and entered Vienna at the Donauinsel. The confusing part was the fact that the train ticket was from Krems but the map indicated the train was from Traismauer to Tulln on Donau. It was difficult riding alone to lift the bike onto the train and then off the train. Overall, I enjoyed the tour very much, meeting great fellow travelers, and eating great breakfasts and seeing this stretch of the Danube.
