Passau-Danube Self-Guided Cycle Trip May 2024
An easy trip down the stop-banks of the Danube, with occasional forays further into the countryside, through forest, farmland and historical towns.
We went for the Class A accommodation choice and it did not disappoint. A comfortable workout on the bike in the morning and early afternoon followed by relaxation in the sauna/spa at a comfortable hotel in the afternoon.
Our standard bikes were fine for this trip - the only time an e-bike would have added anything was when reaching our hotel required going about 5k up reasonably steep hills, but the hotel provided a pickup service so we avoided this anyway.
The guidebook and website navigation were OK, but I think that an app with audio prompts should be developed in future. I wasn't able to purchase a phone mount prior to the trip, and the handle bag flopped down so the phone or guide book map couldn't be read on the go. As a result we missed a couple of river crossings and ended up on the wrong side of the Danube.
However it was generally no problem to find a ferry or the next bridge and get back on track. The bag transfer system worked perfectly.
Our Vienna hotel was perfectly located near the centre.
This was a very enjoyable trip, which we would recommend to anyone looking for a relatively easy ride and comfortable relaxation at the end of the day.
