Alps-Adriatic cycle trail / Villach-Ljubljana-Trieste

From Austria via Slovenia to Italy

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile / Level 2-3:

Mostly on cycle paths or along very quiet side roads through small villages and idyllic landscapes. In some places there are differences in altitude of up to 400m to overcome. Recommended for children aged 14 and over

Day 1: Villach

Individual arrival in Villach

Day 2: Villach – Tarvis, approx. 40 km

Following the idyllic landscape along the Gail river, you cycle today across the Italian border. Enjoy a real Italian gelato and end the first day in Tarvis.

Day 3: Tarvis – Bled, approx. 55 km

Today you leave Bella Italia already and cycle into Slovenia in the direction of Bled. You pass the skiing area of Kranjska Gora and cycle past beautiful untouched landscapes. You have the option of shortening the route by about 10 km by train. You would also cleverly avoid a few metres of altitude this way.

Day 4: Bled – Ljubljana, approx. 55 km

vToday you cycle to Ljubljana, the "green capital of Europe". Along the way you have the chance to enjoy breathtaking views over the Julian Alps and the Karavanke mountains. You will pass interesting towns like the medieval Radovljica and Kranj with its picturesque old town. Once you arrive in Ljubljana, don’t miss the Dragon Bridge, which is considered the city’s landmark.

Day 5: Ljubljana – Postojna, approx. 60 km

Surrounded by green hills and farms, you cycle today via the town of Logatec to Postojna. Don’t miss the Postojna Cave, the second largest stalactite cave in the world! The underground passages and caves can be explored on a 1.5h round trip with the 140-year-old cave train.

Day 6: Postojna – Lipizza, approx. 50 km

Today’s cycle tour takes you to Lipizza, the home of the white horses which gained their noble reputation and fame through the Vienna Riding School. On the way to Lipizza you will pass Pivka, where you can gain an insight into Slovenia’s past in the Park of Military History.

Day 7: Lipizza – Trieste, approx. 30 km

Today you cycle along the former railway line of the narrow-gauge railway "Parnezana" towards Trieste. There are hardly any metres in altitude to overcome, as the route goes gently but steadily downhill towards the sea. In the evening, let your journey come to an end in beautiful Trieste and enjoy the meditteranean flair.
