Tour profile / Level 2-3

The route is hilly and includes some challenging climbs. Half of the tour is covered on bike paths that are separated from road traffic. Otherwise, the bike path runs on country roads, secondary roads or forest roads. Increased traffic is to be expected in towns and cities. Find detailled tour profiles under each day description.

Day 1: Vienna

Your journey begins in the vibrant waltz metropolis of Vienna. The day of arrival is yours - how about a stroll through the city or a visit to a typical Viennese Heuriger?

Day 2: Vienna – Wiener Neustadt, approx. 61 km

Saddle up! After leaving the city area, immerse yourself in the wine-growing area of the spa region. You can enjoy typical wine tavern culture in the small wine villages. The spa town of Baden, with its spas and thermal springs, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wiener Neustadt is a testimony to medieval fortress architecture. The town was built with the ransom money for the English King Richard the Lionheart, who was held prisoner in Dürnstein, and offers numerous sights. Stroll through the old town.

Day 3: Wiener Neustadt – Bruck an der Mur, approx. 63 km + train ride

Your day begins with a ride on the Semmering Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (included). The railroad was the first mountain railroad in the world and winds its way along impressive viaducts and tunnels through the surrounding mountains to the start of your cycling stage, to Semmering. The breathtaking mountain scenery of Styria accompanies you along the route until you reach Bruck an der Mur. The charming town invites you to explore its medieval buildings. A perfect mix of nature and culture!

Day 4: Bruck an der Mur – Graz, approx. 61 km

On the Mur Cycle Path, you follow Austria’s second largest river through the green heart of Austria, Styria. You will experience the diversity of this region at first hand. The surroundings change from an alpine world to a mild and pleasant climate in the Graz basin. Graz, the capital of Styria, will enchant you. The imposing Schlossberg and the historic old town are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Day 5: Graz – Maribor, approx. 75 km

One of the highlights of the route is the passage through southern Styria, one of Austria’s best-known wine regions. The area is characterized by picturesque vineyards and traditional wine taverns. This is an ideal place to take a break and sample the regional specialties. Maribor is known for the oldest vine in the world and the charming old town. Let yourself be enchanted by the city’s narrow streets and historic squares.

Day 6: Maribor – Celje/Lasko, approx. 77-89 km

The route continues through the hilly wine region of Slovenska Stajerska (Lower Styria), one of the most important wine-growing regions in Slovenia. There are numerous opportunities to stop at one of the local wineries. You reach Celje, the third biggest city of Slovenia. Your cycle tour can move on to the small town of Laško, known for its healing thermal springs and Laško beer. The town’s brewing tradition goes back a long way and a visit to the Laško brewery is a worthwhile end to your stage.

Day 7: Celje/Lasko – Ljubljana, approx. 66-100 km

You pass traditional Slovenian villages again and again, where you can experience the rural atmosphere of Slovenia up close. A highlight of the route is the Trojan Pass. After a short climb, breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys await you. Treat yourself to a break and try some “Trojan doughnuts” (filled dumplings) in one of the bakeries. The cycle route can be shortened by train between Hrastnik and Sava (optional). This shortens the route length to a total of approx. 66/78 km. Your destination is Ljubljana, one of the most charming capital cities in Europe. Ljubljana is known for its lively old town and the many bridges over the River Ljubljanica. Visit the famous Tromostovje bridges, Prešeren Square and Ljubljana Castle.

Day 8: Ljubljana – Postojna, approx. 60 km

On your way to Postojna, you will cross the impressive karst landscape, which is known for its caves, rocks and underground rivers. Your destination is world-famous for the Postojna Caves, one of the largest karst cave systems in the world and an absolute natural wonder. The caves are one of the most visited tourist attractions in Slovenia and offer a unique insight into the fascinating underground worlds of wonder. Just a few kilometers from Postojna is the impressive Predjama Castle, spectacularly built into a rock face. This medieval cave castle is another highlight of the region and offers exciting insights into the history of the Karst region.

Day 9: Postojna – Trieste, approx. 76 km

After driving through the karst landscape of Slovenia and the first Mediterranean impressions in Italy, Trieste is the perfect end to your tour. On the way there, you will experience impressive views of the Adriatic Sea and the coast. Enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere. The port city of Trieste welcomes you with a mixture of Italian and Austrian culture. The city was the most important port of the Habsburg monarchy for centuries and is now known for its beautiful architecture and coffee house culture.

Rental bicycles & equipment

Our bicycles are state-of-the-art quality bikes, designed specifically for the requirements and wishes of our guests. This is how we created easy-running, robust touring bikes with a low comfort entry, precise Shimano Nexus 8-speed hub gears, modern V-brakes, hollow aluminum rims and puncture-proof tires. The elevating handlebars allow for comfortable and back-friendly riding. The bikes in our fleet are mostly not older than 3 years. During the duration of the trip you are liable for any damage, loss or theft.

The following bikes are available with 28" tires in various frame sizes (Men’s frames are provided for men over 188 cm):

  • 24-speed trekking bikes UNISEX* with hand brakes and freewheel
  • E-bikes (pedelecs) UNISEX
  • child seat, child trailer, pull-along bikes

Our rental bikes are equipped with a spacious waterproof pannier, a handy handlebar bag, service kit with tools, air pump,bike lock per room.


E-Bikes | Electric bikes | Pedelecs

We provide you with modern quality e-bikes (pedelecs) with 7 or 8-speed hub gears, gradually selectable aid of pedaling power, puncture-proof tires and low UNISEX comfort entry. The bikes have a powerful motor and a strong lithium-ion battery, one battery charge is enough for up to 70 kilometers. You conserve your battery by starting with the lowest possible assistance and increasing it as needed. You charge the batteries at night using the charger.

IMPORTANT: please reserve ebikes early, as they are only available in very limited numbers.


Breakdowns

Breakdowns or punctures can occur even with new wheels and the best maintenance. Fix punctures yourself, in case of major damage please contact our on-site staff. Please do not have any repairs done to the bikes without our approval.


Bringing of own bikes

You are welcome to bring your own bike. This is specially adapted to your needs and we understand very well that you would naturally like to have it with you on your bike trip. Do not forget to bring a tool bag including necessary keys and spare tube as well as a lock and check the bike for functionality before your departure.

In Austria, helmets are compulsory for children up to the age of 12, in Slovenia until the age of 18! Protect your youngest and bring a suitable bike helmet!

The tourism tax is to be paid locally in the respective hotel and amounts to approx. € 1,- to 2,50.
