Danube Cycle Path 3-Country-Tour Vienna - Budapest | Athletic

Vienna - Bratislava - Budapest

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile / Level 1 - 2

The tour is mostly flat with rolling hills that are sometimes slightly steep. The Austrian section follows well maintained and equipped cycle pathes directly mainly close to the river banks, in Hungary you will often cycle on quiet country backroads. On entering and leaving cities there is, of course, traffic that must be observed! The routes are suitable for an athletic riding style, they can be up to 95 km long.

Day 1: Vienna

Individual arrival in the waltz metropolis (our tip: cheap flights to Vienna/Bratislava). This evening is yours - how about a little stroll through the city or a visit to a typical Viennese wine tavern?

Day 2: Vienna – Bratislava, approx. 68 km

The Donauauen National Park begins just outside Vienna and is an idyllic landscape with a variety of flora and fauna. Passing Orth Castle and Eckartsau Castle, you reach the spa town of Bad Deutsch Altenburg, where the Romans left their mark. The Slovakian capital Bratislava enchants with its dreamy old town and numerous magnificent buildings. The castle towers high above the Danube.

Day 3: Bratislava – Györ, approx. 82 km

The Schüttinsel is a paradise for birds and fish. In the middle of this untouched landscape with small islands you will find dreamy farming villages and a labyrinth of Danube side arms. Your destination for the day is the city of Györ, situated at the mouth of 3 rivers. The city enchants with its baroque old town.

Day 4: Györ – Esztergom, approx. 95 km

The stage first takes you through gently undulating farmland back to the Danube in the divided town of Komarom, King Matthias’ favorite town. You cycle along the Slovakian bank of the Danube on embankment paths and low-traffic side roads through small farming villages. You pass the Roman fort of Kelemantia on the way to the episcopal and royal city of Esztergom, whose basilica, the largest church in Hungary, is a glittering highlight of this tour. Recommendation: Take the comfortable train between Györ and Komarno. Train tickets are available from ticket machines at the station and cost around € 1 per journey. This shortens the cycling stage to a total of approx. 52 km.

Day 5: Esztergom – Budapest, approx. 91 km

The hilly landscape of the Danube Bend will also enchant you. You cycle through small, idyllic villages, discover the small artists’ town of Szentendre with its nearby farm museum and enjoy a fantastic view of Budapest’s most famous sights as you cycle in.

Day 6: Budapest

The morning is at leisure. The train connections from Budapest are very good (to Vienna every hour, journey time approx. 3 hours), buses also stop at Vienna Airport.
