Alps-Adriatic cycle trail / Salzburg - Grado II

Variant without Tauern tunnel

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile / Level 2:

The tour runs along bike paths or very quiet side roads, through small villages and picturesque landscape. The most challenging section on the Pass Lueg can also be bypassed by train.

The tour is suitable for children over 16 years.

Day 1: Salzburg

Individual arrival at the starting hotel in Salzburg. A bicycle trip could not start more impressively than in Salzburg, the city of Mozart. You are surrounded by so many Baroque monuments in this beautiful old town. Take some delicious Mozartkugeln (typical Austrian confectionary) on your journey to the sea.

Day 2: Salzburg – Bischofshofen/St. Johann, approx. 60 km

You leave the city with a view of Hohensalzburg Fortress. The mountains are already visible in the distance as you cycle along the Salzach. On the way, you will pass Hellbrunn Palace, whose trick fountains have been delighting young and old for more than 400 years. The journey continues along the Tauern Cycle Path towards Hallein, known for its crooked town houses and, above all, for the white gold - salt. Another highlight is the waterfall in Golling.

Day 3: Bischofshofen/St. Johann – Villach, approx. 45 km + Transfer

Today’s stage begins in the direction of Schwarzach. From Schwarzach, a shuttle bus will take you to Spittal an der Drau. Once you are back on your bike, you will complete the last section of the stage on the Drau Cycle Path to Villach.

Day 4: Villach – Tarvisio/Camporosso, approx. 40 km

Following the Gail River, you will leave Villach behind and soon after, you will also say goodbye to Austria and hello to Italy. The Kanaltal Valley extends into the tri-border region of Italy, Austria and Slovenia, with the Italian border town of Tarvisio at its center. Austrians, Slovenes, Friulians and Italians have been living here together for centuries, and all three major European language families – Germanic, Romance and Slavic – come together here.

Day 5: Tarvis – Venzone/surroundings, approx. 55 km

Tarvisio, a small town surrounded by wide valleys and forests, is the starting point of your tour today. It is not only one of the most important mountain resorts in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, but also one of the ski centers in this region. Continuing through the Valcanale, you can admire the beauties of the Friulian Alpine region from the saddle, with its unspoilt, untouched nature.

Day 6: Venzone/Umgebung – Udine, approx. 55 km

Gemona del Friuli, a small town located at the southern end of Valcanale and at the foothills of the Julian Alps, is considered one of the most beautiful historical towns in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Hills full of vineyards line your path and invite you to taste one or two of the local wines. Udine, characterized by Venetian influences, radiates calm and composure; you can admire important late Gothic and Renaissance buildings while having a coffee in the piazza or strolling through the city center.

Day 7: Udine – Grado, approx. 55 km

Cycling through the vineyards you will continue your journey. The first highlight of today‘s stage is Palmanova with its star-shaped fortress from the 16th century. Across the hexagonal main square, the route leads out of the Unesco World Heritage Site towards Aquileia. Built in 180 BC, it was one of the most important economic centres of the Roman Empire. Numerous excavation sites and a huge floor mosaic in the Byzantine Basilica are vivid witnesses of this time. A 5 km long straight line leads through the lagoon to Grado, the destination of your journey. After a total of 420 km you have reached the Italian Riviera.

Day 8: Grado

    Salzburg - Grado e-bike tour July 2022

Overall this was an excellent cycle tour. All of the accomodation was very good with all hotel staff very helpful. The e-bikes were very good - it would have been very difficult for us without e-bikes. We felt it necessary to manage battery usage carefully ...
