    Drau Cycle Path

    South Tyrol - Lake Klopeinersee

    • The tour starts at the source of the river Drau in Dobbiaco. This is the place where Gustav Mahler, the composer, found most of his inspiration. The river Drau accompanies you on the way to the East Austrian capital of Lienz.

From here the tour takes you through Spittal a.d. Drau and Rosegg to the Lake Klopeinersee. On the way you will encounter several lakes where you can have a refreshing bath. Or you just enjoy the sun on the banks of the Millstätter*, Ossiacher*, Faaker or Wörthersee* Lakes (*can be reached doing some loops).

      Tour profile / level 1

This tour is ideal for beginners and families. The route mainly takes you alongside the river Drau and there are no steep inclines. The bicycle path is well marked.

      Day 1: Niederdorf/Toblach

Individual arrival at the hotel in Hochpustertal. Free, unguarded public car park near the hotel.

      Day 2: Niederdorf/Toblach – Lienz, approx. 50 - 55 km

Starting in Villabassa/Dobbiaco you cycle along the bike path to San Candido and then on to Sillian. Afterwards it is downhill all the way to the Austrian town of Lienz, where already the „Illyrer“ founded one colony, which was developed by the Romans to the city „Aguntum“.

      Day 3: Lienz – Dellach/Berg, approx. 30 - 35 km

Visit the outdoor museum “Aguntum” - excavations and discoveries report about that Roman settlement. You leave from where the Isel flows into the Drau and carry on with the bike path to Oberdrauburg (“Perchten and Alm” museum and old mill) and then to Berg. This was once an important Roman Trade Route.

      Day 4: Dellach/Berg – Sachsenburg/Spittal, approx. 30-45 km

From Dellach/Berg you pass through idyllic landscape and dreamy villages en route to Sachsenburg/Spittal an der Drau. You have the possibility of taking a detour to lake Millstättersee for a quick swim or a short rest. Spittal a.d. Drau is famous for its comedies at Castle Porcia, one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Austria to visit.

      Day 5: Sachsenburg/Spittal - Rosegg/Mühlbach, approx. 60-70 km

This day takes you to Rosegg/Mühlbach via Villach, the second largest town in Carinthia. Villach is not only well known for its carnival adventures, but also for its fair. There are also many interesting places to visit. Through its position at the border triangle Carinthia-Slovenia-Italy you will experience the mediterranean flair. The nice and well preserved medieval city centre invites to stroll and linger. Along the bike path you cycle to Rosegg/Mühlbach.

      Day 6: Rosegg/Mühlbach - Lake Klopeinersee, approx. 55 - 60 km

Today the bike tour leads you through the charming Rosental. During your journey along the Drau cycle path you get the possibility for the one or another cultural or sportive side trip. At lake Feistritz you can do canoeing or you visit the gunsmiths and Carnica museum of apiculture in Ferlach. Gain an insight view on bee hives, beekeeping tools and much more. The exhibition also documents the apiculture traditions of the Rosental valley. The Tscheppa gorge is 1.2 km long. The 26 m high Tschauko waterfall and the gateway through the rock are well worth seeing.

Day 7: Lake Klopeinersee (day of rest)

You are spoilt for choice: either a relaxing day on the banks of lake Klopeiner See or you start for an individual bicycle tour in Southern Carinthia.

      Day 8: Lake Klopeinersee

With an E-bike every bike tour is a breeze! If you had few opportunities to cycle over the last weeks or if you are not sure concerning your fitness, but also with physical disabilities, every bike ride is a treat! The shiftable, low noise electric drive of our modern electro bike relieves you of some of the work and increases the pedal force up to 3 times ... So you can now book a bike tour together with cyclists who have different fitness level. Acclivity can be handled easily.

A note to our customers: Electric bikes are a great thing! However, due to their characteristics (high weight + high speed) they should only be booked by very experienced and safe cyclists with a good sense of balance. E-bikes are not appropriate for persons who do not ride bikes frequently.
