Your cycling tour begins in the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town of Salzburg. Baroque alleyways, the impressive panorama of the fortress, and the unmistakable Mozart atmosphere will set the tone for the days ahead. To get in the mood, we recommend taking a break at a traditional café, where you can enjoy the famous Salzburger Nockerl—light, sweet and quintessentially Austrian.

Starting from Salzburg, you’ll cycle into one of Austria’s most beautiful regions, the Salzkammergut, passing glistening lakes and rolling hills. At Mondsee, you’ll encounter the UNESCO-protected prehistoric pile dwellings found throughout the Alps, an important testament to early settlement history. The route continues to Lake Wolfgangsee, where you’ll take the ferry to St. Wolfgang. Once you arrive in the former imperial town of Bad Ischl, it’s well worth visiting the traditional Zauner pastry shop—the famous Zaunerstollen is a true specialty and a treat for anyone with a sweet tooth.

You’ll cycle leisurely to Lake Hallstatt, enjoying impressive views of the Dachstein Glacier along the way. You’ll then take a boat to the world-famous town of Hallstatt, nestled between the lake and the mountains. It is part of the Hallstatt-Dachstein UNESCO World Heritage region. After visiting the World Heritage Museum, you’ll have time to soak up the town’s unique atmosphere—perhaps with some freshly caught fish right on the lakeshore. The idyllic view is straight from an Austrian postcard.

Today’s bike tour takes you via Laakirchen (Paper-Making Museum) and Steyermühl to Lambach. From there, you’ll continue by train to Linz, where you’ll have plenty of time to explore the numerous sights of Upper Austria’s capital. This modern cultural city has been designated a UNESCO City of Media Arts.

You’ll follow the course of the Danube along the popular Danube Cycle Path and cycle alongside the UNESCO-protected Danube Limes, which once formed the northern border of the Roman Empire. Ahead of you lies Enns, Austria’s oldest city, and the charming little Danube town of Grein, with its historic town center and Austria’s oldest theater.

Through the wild and romantic Strudengau region, you’ll continue following the Danube towards the UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau. The varied landscape, featuring historic sites and impressive views, will accompany you all the way to the Baroque Melk Abbey, the Wachau’s most famous landmark. In the evening, a cozy Heuriger invites you to linger: enjoy a glass of Wachau wine and regional specialties in a traditional atmosphere.

Enjoy the ride through the picturesque villages of the UNESCO World Heritage region Wachau. Passing through Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein, the route continues to the medieval town of Krems. Your journey ends with a train ride from Tulln to the “City of Music,” Vienna. There, two UNESCO highlights await you: the historic city center and Schönbrunn Palace. A culinary highlight to round off the day: a classic Wiener Schnitzel at a traditional inn.
