Via Claudia Augusta II Athletic

Augsburg/Füssen - Riva del Garda

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile / level 2-3

The route is mostly on paved bike and agricultural roads, as well as side streets with little traffic and through towns. There are some sections on gravel surfaces and one transfer over the Fern Pass (Biberwier - Fernsteinsee). There is a climb of about 700 meters in altitude between Pfunds and the Reschen Pass. From the Reschensee to Meran, there are some longer downhill sections.

Route Augsburg – Riva del Garda (8 nights)

Day 1: Augsburg
Individual arrival.

Day 2: Augsburg – Schongau region, approx. 85 km
The name of the city of Augsburg goes back to the Roman provincial capital Augusta Vindelicorum, which was founded in 15 BC under Emperor Augustus. However, Augsburg became famous as the “Fugger city”. A visit to the Fuggerei, the oldest social housing in the world still in use today, is almost obligatory. On the way to Schongau, you should definitely pay a visit to the district town of Landsberg am Lech. This town has real charm. Schongau itself boasts a picturesque old town and an almost completely preserved city wall.

Day 3: Region Schongau Nature Park Region Reutte, approx. 55 km
From Schongau, the route continues along the Lech towards Tyrol and thus towards the mighty Alpine arch. Before the Austrian border, the “fairytale castle” of Neuschwanstein near Füssen awaits its visitors.

Day 4: Reutte Nature Park Region – Landeck, approx. 65 km (without transfer approx. 75 km)
Shortly after Reutte, there is an ascent up to the Ehrenberger Klause with a remarkable fortress from the Thirty Years’ War. From Biberwier, you can take the rather demanding route over the Fernpass with the Via Claudia Huckepack bus. From Fernstein Castle, you then cycle via Nassereith through the picturesque Gurgltal. A ’beery’ experience awaits you in Tarrenz at Starkenberg Castle with its traditional private brewery. From Imst, you finally cycle along the Inn Cycle Path to the district capital Landeck.

Day 5: Landeck – Lake Reschensee holiday region & Obervinschgau, approx. 85 km
The cycle path runs alongside the Inn from Landeck to Pfunds. After Pfunds, the route passes through Swiss territory for about 10 kilometers. From Martina in the Lower Engadine, there are about 400 meters of altitude to cycle along a few switchbacks up to the Norbertshöhe. After a short downhill stretch to Nauders, a gentle ascent leads up to the Reschenpass, where you cross the border into Italy and the main Alpine ridge. Passing the Reschen reservoir, with one of South Tyrol’s most famous photo motifs – the sunken church tower of Altgraun – you cycle rapidly down towards Mals. Enjoy your first evening in South Tyrol in the old alleys of the town.

Day 6: Lake Reschensee holiday region & Upper Vinschgau – Meran, approx. 65 km
Now it is time to cross the entire Vinschgau. The route leads from around 1,200 m above sea level in Burgeis down to 350 m above sea level in Meran. Often you will follow the course of the Adige directly. From the starting point, this pleasure tour first descends to Glurns, the smallest town in the Alpine region. Via the marble town of Laas, you will then reach Naturns and finally – passing the striking Kastelbell Castle – the spa town of Meran. Here you can relax on an evening stroll along the Passer promenade, surrounded by subtropical flora.

Day 7: Meran – Castelfeder holiday region, approx. 50 km
There are many attractions along this route: the famous Schnatterpeck altar in the church of Niederlana, the highest church tower in South Tyrol in Terlan, as well as numerous castles and ruins on both sides of the valley. And after the opportunity for a short detour to South Tyrol’s capital, Bolzano, Lake Kaltern offers a great opportunity to cool down any tired legs.

Day 8: Holiday region Castelfeder/Auer – Riva del Garda, approx. 80-90 km
You should have already practiced a few basic Italian words before the journey continues along the Adige River to Trento, where you will be greeted by the very beautiful old town with its cathedral and Buonconsiglio Castle. After that, the last kilometers of your sporty journey will take you to Rovereto, where you will leave the Adige River at Mori and turn towards Lake Garda. After a short ascent to Passo San Giovanni (287 m), you will have a great view of the descent to the lake at Torbole and then further along the lake shore to Riva del Garda.

Day 9: Riva del Garda
Individual departure or opportunity to extend your stay.

Route Füssen – Riva del Garda (6 nights)

Day 1: Füssen
Individual arrival in Füssen.

Day 2: Füssen – Landeck, approx. 75 km
Castles and palaces line the route today – the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau send you on your way to tackle a short, manageable ascent just after Reutte up to the Ehrenberg Klause/Ehrenberg Castle ruins. From there, the route continues through the Tyrolean Außerfern to Biberwier, from where we take you over the Fernpass in a comfortable transfer. From Fernstein Castle, you then cycle via Nassereith through the picturesque Gurgltal to Imst. From Imst, you finally cycle along the Inn Cycle Path to the district capital Landeck.

Day 3: Landeck – Lake Reschensee holiday region & Obervinschgau, approx. 85 km
The cycle path runs alongside the Inn from Landeck, along the so-called Oberes Gericht to Pfunds. After Pfunds, the route passes through Swiss territory for about 10 kilometers. From Martina in the Lower Engadine, you have to cycle about 400 meters of altitude along a few switchbacks up to the Norbertshöhe. After a short downhill passage down to Nauders, a gentle ascent continues up to the Reschenpass, where you cross the border into Italy and the main ridge of the Alps. Past the Reschen reservoir, with one of the most famous photo motifs in South Tyrol – the sunken church tower of Altgraun – you cycle rapidly down towards Mals. Enjoy your first evening in South Tyrol in the old lanes of the town.

Day 4: Lake Reschensee holiday region & Upper Vinschgau Valley – Meran, approx. 65 km
Now it is time to cross the entire Vinschgau Valley. The route leads from over 1,200 meters above sea level down to 350 meters above sea level in Meran. Often you will follow the course of the Adige River. From the starting point, this leisurely tour first descends to Glurns, the smallest town in the Alpine region. Via the marble town of Laas, you will then reach Naturns and finally – passing the striking Kastelbell Castle – the spa town of Meran. Here you can relax during an evening stroll along the Passer promenade, surrounded by subtropical flora.

Day 5: Meran – Castelfeder holiday region, approx. 50-60 km
There are many attractions along this route: the famous Schnatterpeck altar in the church of Niederlana, the highest church tower in South Tyrol in Terlan, as well as numerous castles and ruins on both sides of the valley. After the opportunity for a short detour to Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol, Lake Kaltern offers a great opportunity to cool down tired legs. The holiday region Castelfeder with the villages of Ora, Montagna, Egna and Salorno, where the German-speaking South Tyrol ends, is the stage destination.

Day 6: Holiday region Castelfeder – Riva del Garda, approx. 80-90 km
You should have already practiced a few basic Italian words before the journey continues along the Adige River to Trento, where you will be greeted by the very beautiful old town with its cathedral and Buonconsiglio Castle.
