    South Alsace Roundtrip

    Tour of the border triangle

    • The picturesque city of Freiburg is the starting point for your tour. At the Rhine knee you can enjoy one of the most beautiful and well preserved medieval old towns in Europe. The Rhine passes through beautiful natural landscapes, the impressive mountain ranges of the Black Forest, always firmly in view of the Baden wine route and Freiburg with its picturesque old town.

On the other side of the Rhine, Colmar is waiting, the capital of Alsace wines. Through picturesque and typically French countryside, the River Lauch and the many canals flow round the old town with its cathedral, tanners’ quarter and the former fishermen’s’ quarter of Little Venice.

At the foot of the Vosges Mountains, you cycle along the French wine route, through dreamy villages with many Alsatian timber-frame houses and almost perfectly preserved mediaeval town centres. Mulhouse and its area, the European capital of technical museums, is dominated by the architectural diversity from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the period of promoterism and modern times.

      Tour profile / level 2

You will cycle mainly on cycle paths, on minor agricultural tarred roads or on little secondary roads without much traffic.

      Day 1: Freiburg im Breisgau

      Individual arrival.

Day 2: Freiburg im Breisgau - Colmar, approx. 55 km

The 13th century Breisach Cathedral towers imposingly over the bank of the Rhine. You cross the Rhine here to Neuf-Brisach in Alsace, a 17th century, octagonal fortified town. The day ends wonderfully in beautiful Colmar, one of the most delightful cities on the French wine route.

Day 3: Colmar - Guebwiller, approx. 41 km

From Colmar we follow the French wine route. The dreamy wine-growing villages, with many Alsatian timber-frame houses, and magnificent mediaeval town centres in the midst of extensive vineyards are areas for unwinding, enjoyment and simply relaxing.

Day 4: Guebwiller - Mulhouse, approx. 35 km

From Guebwiller, you ride to Ungersheim, till the Ecomusee d’Alsace. From here, the cycle path guides you directly to Mulhouse with its old town full of change. The largest automobile collection in the world and the Rail & Electricity Museum will inspire everyone, not just technology fans.

Day 5: Mulhouse - Müllheim, approx. 29 km

We ride to Mulhouse along the typical canal and pedal through extensive woodland to the Rhine. The old fortress at Neuenburg welcomes you to the German side, before continuing to idyllic Müllheim at the foot of the Black Forest.

Day 6: Müllheim - Freiburg im Breisgau, approx. 34 km

After the visit to the Villa Urbana and the Malteserschloss in Heitersheim, we head into the Breisgau. In the treasure chest of Bad Krozingen the mineral and thermal springs await you, before the day fades away in Freiburg, the gateway to the Black Forest.

    • Bicycles inclusive panniers:

The offered bikes are touring bikes with an aluminium frame and kitted with responsive brakes and gears. Plus: comfort gel saddles, flat-palmed grips, Schwalbe Marathon anti-puncture tyres.

You can choose between the following bikes:

      • 7-speed-bike with hand brake and backpedal brake
      • 21-speed-bike with hand brakes

By popular demand, we have now invested in a considerable number of e-bikes, much favoured by cyclists who love the great Outdoors, but prefer to let the bike take the strain.

With an electro bike every bike tour is a breeze! The shiftable, low noise electric drive of our modern E-bike relieves you of some of the work and increases the pedal force up to 3 times ... Acclivity can be handled easily.

Tip: E-bikes are a great development, but should be - due to their driving characteristics (high weight + high speed) - booked only by very safe and experienced cyclists with a very good sense of balance. Not suitable are electric bikes for people who rarely ride a bicycle.

      Private bicycles

You are welcome to bring your own bicycle. This is adapted especially to your needs. Do not forget to bring a repair kit with all necessary tools such as: keys, reserve tube and lock. Please check your own bicycle for operability upon arrival.
