Altmuehltal Cycle Path 7-8 days

Rothenburg - Regensburg

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile: Level 1-2

The area is mostly flat. You bike on cycle paths and side roads. One uphill stretch is at the beginning.

Variant: Rothenburg – Regensburg 6 nights

Day 1: Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Individual arrival. You should definitely plan some time for exploring the famous old town centre and many historical buildings of Rothenburg. In the evening you can even go on a tour with the night watchman (included) through the romantic illuminated alleys. You spend the night in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Day 2: Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Herrieden/Ansbach, approx. 45 - 55 kmYou set on the bike tour through the quiet countryside of the upper Altmühl valley. You bike through lovely landscapes and picturesque farming villages. You pass Leutershausen, home of Gustav Weißkopf who built the first motorised plane ever and you can visit a museum and monument in his honour. Finally you arrive in Herrieden. The city’s landmark is a stork because they have been nesting on towers and breeding here for centuries.

Day 3: Herrieden/Ansbach – Weißenburg / Treuchtlingen, approx. 55 - 65 km
Via Gunzenhausen you make your way to Markt Berolzheim. Alongside the Altmühl you continue to Treuchtlingen, where you can relax in the Altmühl Baths. Alternatively, you leave the Altmühl just before Markt Berolzheim and take the direct route to Weißenburg. You spend the night in Weißenburg or Treuchtlingen.

Day 4: Weißenburg / Treuchtlingen – Eichstätt, approx. 45 - 55 km
Treuchtlingen is the beginning of the most spectacular area you pass on this tour. The shimmering white Dolomite rocks which rise out of the forested hills are an amazing sight. You take the romantic bike trail to Pappenheim and on to Solnhofen. In a nearby quarry the famous Archaeopterix fossils were found. You spend the night in Eichstätt, where a walk from the "Residenzplatz" to Willibaldsburg Castle is recommended.

Day 5: Eichstätt – Riedenburg, approx. 55  - 75 km
Today you will first travel to Beilngries, whose town centre is framed by a well-preserved town wall. Then you continue to the three-castle town of Riedenburg and can admire the impressive collection of gemstones in the crystal museum. To shorten the route to Riedenburg, you can change to the train in Dietfurt (own responsibility).

Day 6: Riedenburg – Regensburg, approx. 65 km
An imposing spectacel of nature is the Danube breakthrough at Weltenburg. Regenburg with its medieval cityscape stands for a momument of two thousand year of art and cultural history. Take a walk through the tiny streets and places, the famous stone bridge and the cathedral St. Peter.

Day 7: Regensburg
Individual departure or extension of your stay (cycle tour until Passau possible).

We were a group of four from the UK enjoying our first cycle trip through Rad+Reisen. The Bavarian weather proved to be quite variable with rain, hail and even snow flurries in April. The accommodation (with the exception of the last night in a lifeless ...

We have done 5 previous bike tours booked through Rad&Reisen. As we live outside of Europe, having the whole package of provided bikes, luggage transfer and accommodation is the only way for us. Generally we are pleased that everything is organised. ...

Great trip.

This is our 6th bike trip with Rad Reisen. It was very enjoyable. As usual, it was hard in some towns to find the hotel. The exact description of where the hotel is located would be helpful. Other than that, this is a terrific cycle path. We were ...
