Culture and Nature of the Young Danube

Donaueschingen - Donauwörth

Tour map

Route

Tour profile/ Level 1-2:

The first two stages are slightly hilly, after that the route is flat to a large extent and along asphalt paths, some parts of the path run along compressed earthen paths.

Day 1: Donaueschingen

Individial arrival. The Brigach and Breg Black Forest rivers join to form the Danube near the town. The Fürstenberg castle built in the Belle Epoch style is a testament to the importance of the Fürstenberg family.

Day 2: Donaueschingen – Mühlheim/Fridingen, approx. 45 - 50 km

The first leg leads you through the so-called „Baar“ landscape. In Immendingen you will be able to visit an important natural phenomenon: the sinking of the Danube. Here the river disappears beneath the porous chalk rock for the majority of the year to flow into the Rhine.

Day 3: Mühlheim/Fridingen – Sigmaringen/Scheer, approx. 45 - 55 km

Today you will travel through the Danube opening which will probably be one of the most beautiful sections of your trip. The castle in Sigmaringen is still inhabited where you can have a guided tour.

Day 4: Sigmaringen/Scheer – Obermarchtal/Ehingen, approx. 40 - 70 km

From here the landscape gets wider and more delightful. You ride along the Danube until you reach Hundersingen, where the celtic open-air-museum is worth a visit. In Obermarchtal, the beautiful baroque monastery is awaiting you.

Day 5: Obermarchtal/Ehingen – Blaubeuren – Ulm, approx. 40 - 60 km

Behind the monastery of Blaubeuren you will find the famous Blautopf. Medieval castles and ruins accompany you along the Blau until you reach the Swabian-Bavarian double city of Ulm with the highest church tower in the world.

Day 6: Ulm – Lauingen, approx. 50 km

Between Ulm and Lauingen you will pass village after village which are all beautifully well kept. Lauingen is also called "the city of towers".

Day 7: Lauingen – Donauwoerth/Woernitzstein, approx. 40 - 45 km

The villages are mainly located somewhat off the beaten track on hills protected from the river floodwaters. You cycle through wetlands to Donauwörth, which is located on the outlet of the river Wörnitz.

Day 8: Donauwoerth/Woernitzstein

Individual departure or extension.

Local people were always very helpful though...a sat nav would probably have made life simpler. But we still really enjoyed the whole tour...D.K. 04/17

A really great trip, but we hope to use sat nav next time...

Sometimes we were confused about the next step to take on our route, at some junctions there were no signs, and we were not sure which direction to take...sometimes we were sent up the principal street of a town, and there were no more signs for a long ...
