Heidelberg and the Nibelungen

Roundtrip in the Rhein and Neckar region

Itinerary

Route

You cycle on well-developed bike paths, quiet country roads and well-drive forest roads. At the city entrances and exits you cycle on designated bike lanes and have to expect more traffic. The route runs through partly flat to slightly hilly terrain.

Visit the University library and take a look at the precious Manesse Handwriting. In the evening, we recommend taking a stroll through the „Untere Straße“.

Today you first cycle along the Neckar to Ladenburg and soon reach Mannheim with its baroque palace, which is well worth seeing. You then cycle along the banks of the Rhine past the port facilities and arrive in the imperial city of Worms.

You leave the cathedral, Luther and Nibelungen city of Worms and reach the famous wine route. The mild climate here allows exotic fruits such as lemons and figs to thrive alongside the wine. The day’s destination is Bad Dürkheim with the Dürkheim giant barrel, alternatively Neustadt.

Along the wine route, you can indulge in hearty Palatinate cuisine in the restaurants. In Speyer, visit the Salian imperial cathedral dating from 1030, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You cycle in the Rhine plain and cycle around extensive branches of the Old Rhine. In Germersheim, the mighty historic fortress and its many beautiful alleyways await your discovery before your route takes you back to Speyer.

Today’s stage leads you along the Kurpfalz (Electoral Palatinate) route into the asparagus city Schwetzingen. The park of the famous hunting and summer residence is one of the loveliest gardens of the Baroque- and Rokoko periods. In Heidelberg, you can enjoy a ride with the mountain railway and visit the world famous castle (incl.)

This varied tour takes you along the Bergstrasse to the twin-castle town of Weinheim. The old town with its historic buildings invites you to linger. The route follows the beautiful Neckar back to Heidelberg.
