Biketour through the Basque Country

From Hondarribia to Bilbao

Itinerary

Route

Tour profile / level 2

Hilly terrain with some steep climbs, although the average distances are not long. Suitable for regular cyclists who have a good condition.

Day 1: Hondarribia

Individual arrival and time for sightseeing in Hondarribia

Day 2: Hondarribia – San Sebastián, approx. 32 km

The first stage connects two large bays of breathtaking beauty through the challenging climb up Mount Jaizkibel. After leaving the mountains behind, you will pass through the interesting old town of Pasaia and, after crossing the estuary, you will reach San Sebastian by boat on the bike path. The city is world famous for its gastronomy, its international film festival, the elegance of its bay and its urban beaches. It is very easy to reach by bike and is a wonderful reward after the efforts of the day. Total ascent: 550 m.

Day 3: San Sebastián – Getaria, approx. 30 km

You leave San Sebastián with a steady climb on a road with spectacular views. After the first 2 km, it is worth taking a short detour to enjoy San Sebastian and La Concha Bay from the Monte Igueldo viewpoint. The second part of the route is much more comfortable and gentle. Along the coast you will visit the historic town of Zarautz and finish today’s stage in the charming fishing village of Getaria, located next to San Antón Mountain. San Antón is a natural park that locals call the "Mouse of Getaria" because of its shape. Total ascent 550 m

Day 4: Getaria – Lekeitio, approx. 32 km

Today you will first continue on the coastal road towards Zumaia. There we recommend you to take the train to the next town, Deba, to avoid the traffic on the national road. After crossing the bridge over the river, you will continue on a pleasant bike path that also passes by a beautiful beach in spectacular surroundings. You will reach Lekeitio on a quiet and pleasant well-maintained bike path with magnificent panoramic views. This village is one of the most charming fishing villages in the region due to its privileged location at the mouth of the river Lea. Enjoy a walk along the colorful harbor and the magnificent beach! Total ascent 300 m

Day 5: Lekeitio – Mundaka, approx. 50 km

On the first kilometers of this stage you will drive through a breathtaking. Inland countryside, most of which is off the roads and follows the river Lea. You will then pass through Guernica, the city bombed in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, which inspired Picasso’s famous painting. Following a long bike path, you will pass Urdaibai, a spectacular Unesco Biosphere Reserve where the Oka River forms marshes and extensive sand flats that are popular with migratory birds. Mundaka is an international surfing spot with the longest left-handed wave in Europe. Total ascent: 450 m

Day 6: Mundaka – Plentzia, approx. 38 km

Today’s stage is the most physically demanding of the entire trip due to the many climbs. However, the reward is the view of one of the most magical and iconic places of the trip: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a landscape scene immortalized in the series Game of Thrones. Then you will pass by the beach of Bakio, one of the most emblematic beaches on the coast of Biscay. The day ends in the elegant seaside town of Plentzia, with a mixture of medieval palaces, charming houses by the sea and a beautiful promenade at the mouth of the river. Total ascent: 900 m

Day 7: Pletzia – Bilbao, approx. 35 km

Today is a leisurely day ahead as you reach the final destination of the trip, mostly on well-maintained bike paths. A final climb at the beginning of this stage will offer you fantastic views of the vast beaches of Sopelana from spectacular cliffs. On the rest of the route you can see how Bilbao has developed in the last twenty years. The city has left behind its industrial past, characterized by the steel industry and shipbuilding, and has become a center for cultural and business tourism, with the Guggenheim Museum being the greatest representative of this metamorphosis. Total ascent: 200 m

Day 8: Bilbao
