Sail + Bike Zeeland

wide beaches and the air of the north

Itinerary

Route

The cycling tours lead you on paved bike paths, and side roads with less traffic. There are no uphill climbs.

Boarding begins at 2:00 p.m. Your ship is moored not far from the city center of Antwerp. The Belgian port city is not only one of Europe’s most important seaports, but is also known for its lively atmosphere and its long tradition in the diamond trade. As soon as all guests are on board, your journey on the Elizabeth begins. Under motor power and, if possible, also under sail, you will cruise through the Flemish Lowlands toward Doel.

After breakfast, a short boat ride will take you to Paal. This is where your first bike tour begins, and at the same time, you’ll cross the border into the Netherlands. Today’s longer bike route takes you to Hulst, a particularly well-preserved fortified town whose historic layout remains clearly visible to this day. From there, you’ll continue cycling to Terneuzen. For those who prefer to take it a bit easier, there is also a shorter route. In any case, the Elizabeth will be waiting for you at the end of the day in Terneuzen.

Today you’ll explore Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Although this region is part of the Netherlands, its location on the Belgian border and along the water gives it a character all its own. Along the way, you’ll experience the wide horizons, dikes, polders, and the constant interplay of land and water that are so typical of the area. At the end of your bike tour, you’ll board the ship again and sail together toward the Zeeland mainland.

Today’s round trip from Middelburg takes you to the Zeeland coast and into the landscapes that so many vacationers love about this region. You’ll cycle toward Vlissingen, then follow the coastline with its dunes, beaches, and sweeping views of the North Sea, pass by Westkapelle, and finally return to Middelburg. It’s a day filled with sea air, light, and open spaces, with exactly the kind of relaxed coastal atmosphere for which Zeeland is so highly regarded.

Today, Zeeland once again shows itself from its most charming side. Your route first takes you to Veere, one of the region’s most beautiful historic harbor towns. The town charms visitors with its old harbor, narrow streets, and numerous buildings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.

From Veere, the route continues to Neeltje Jans, and the journey there is a highlight in itself, as you’ll cycle across the Oosterschelde Storm Surge Barrier. This impressive structure is about 9 kilometers long, rests on 65 massive concrete pillars, and is considered the most famous part of the Delta Works. Neeltje Jans itself is an artificial island that was originally built as a work site during the construction of the barrier and now houses a visitor center dedicated to the Delta Works and the fight against the water. You’ll then cycle on to Kamperland, through an open, water-rich landscape known for its tranquility, vastness, and numerous water sports opportunities.

Today, the focus is on sailing. Perhaps you’ve already had a chance to see how the sails are set over the past few days. Today, you’ll enjoy the maritime experience even more fully. You’ll cruise through the calm waters around the Zeeland Islands, pass through locks, and experience this unique water landscape entirely from the ship. Precisely because we’re mostly sailing in sheltered and relatively calm waters here, this day is especially enjoyable for beginners. You don’t need any prior experience. If you’d like, the crew will be happy to explain the ropes on board, and you might even get to help set the sails yourself. At the end of the day, you’ll arrive in Hansweert.

Disembarkation until 9.30 am and individual departure

Due to different wind and weather conditions, as well as organizational necessities, we reserve the right to change the itinerary. The skipper and his crew discuss the possibilities daily with the guests and will do everything to offer you an unforgettable, varied and active week.
