Moselle Cycle path - Trier to Koblenz
We enjoyed this trip more than the Classic Danube cycle trip we did last year. The overall distance of 200km was about right for our family. We cycled on average 40km a day which was leisurely enough, especially in the heatwave we had in the latter half of the week. We had an extra night in Trier which I would recommend as there is lots to see in this lovely Roman city. The Kaiserthermen (Roman baths) and the city walking tour (booked via trier-info.de) in English (on Sat and Wed at 1pm) were excellent. We thought one night in Koblenz was enough to do the sights as most of Koblenz was bombed in the second world war! Regarding the hotels we upgraded to the better accommodation (Category A) which we recommend as all hotels were central. One hotel didn`t meet the standard of the others: Hotel Schloss Petry in Karden (of Treis-Karden). It is in dire need of renovation and the location is not particularly nice with few restaurant choices (Greek restaurant `Santorini` is not authentically Greek and over priced!). Regarding the cycling routes, the 4th day of cycling from Zell to Treis-Karden was mainly alongside a very busy road (LHS of river). It looked quieter on the RHS bank so would recommend switching to that side. We did cross the river by ferry to Beilstein to get to the RHS. Regarding the Velociped bikes, bottle holders would be a welcome addition and the seats on the 27-speed-tourer bikes aren`t very comfy. Also, on previous Rad Reisen hols we`ve been given a small bag to go on the front of the bikes which has been very useful. The guibo app was a bit glitchy, but the route on the cycle paths is well-marked and easy to cycle on (asphalt). Overall, we had a lovely time cycling through the many vineyards and sampling the Reisling for cheaper than the price of a cup of coffee! Prost!
