Excellent Cycling, but Not Without Its Challenges
This was a 12-day cycling trip in South Africa, from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. In many ways, the trip was excellent, with beautiful and varied routes and stunning scenery throughout. Cycling was almost entirely on roads, sometimes in fairly heavy traffic, which is important to be aware of in advance.
Most of the accommodations were very good and well chosen, although a few were borderline in terms of quality. The trip is demanding, with long cycling days and a very tight schedule, so good preparation and fitness are essential.
The tour leader was adequate in some respects, but unfortunately lacked strong communication skills. She was often moody, gave inconsistent information, and openly reprimanded participants. As a result, people became hesitant to ask questions, which negatively affected the group experience. I believe the trip would have been significantly better with a different tour leader.
The driver, on the other hand, was excellent ? professional, supportive, and consistently positive ? and helped compensate for the tour leader´s shortcomings in communication.
Overall, I would recommend this trip for the scenery, routes, and overall experience, but participants should be prepared for long cycling days, a demanding itinerary, and the intensity of the program.
