Exploring the Mosel - blending history and wine
We had a wonderful time on our trip. Our first trip with e-bikes, which made it possible since one of our party had a recent knee injury. The bike paths and signage were quite good and easy to navigate. The history is impressive with Roman ruins from 200 AD, castles built from 1200 AD to half-timber houses from the 17th century. Sights are on both sides of the river but there are frequent bridges to enable crossing. As travel downriver, ferries also assist with crossings. While exploring towns may require some brief climbs, with some of the castles we wanted to visit involving longer steep climbs, we easily reached them with public transit after parking our bikes. The 3* accommodations met/exceeded our expectations including nice locations and wonderful breakfasts. For one of our stays, we had a room balcony overlooking the Mosel (see pic) and enjoyed a bottle of Riesling from our bar fridge. We had been aware before our trip that for one of the nights, we would be staying at a 2* hotel. It was fine but in the future, would look to change the itinerary or upgrade to a 4*. One of our party had a bike breakdown on our first morning and the bike provider (Velociped) quickly delivered a replacement to our location.
