Chateaux of the Loire category A
The Grand Hotel Tours is excellently located next to the railway station. We found the hotels to be generally of a good standard, particularly the Best Western in Chinon and le Grand Monarque in Azay. The only exception was le Monarque in Blois which definitely did not deserve a three star rating with generally poor customer service, a basic breakfast where we were asked to eat off trays and clear our own table like a canteen while the only attendant vaped at her desk! A small tatty room with multiple items and features not functioning. Surely a better suitable hotel is available in such a large town. Despite using electric bikes we found the distances quite far, often leaving little time to visit even a few of the numerous magnificent chateaux along the route or at daily destinations. The app worked very well and we enjoyed the cycling routes and countryside. However there were some long sections on fast D roads with cars close passing in excess of 90km/hr.
