East of Sicily Self Guided Bike Tour - October 2026 - Mackenzie group of 6
Overall very enjoyable tour. Bikes excellent and luggage transfer very good. CicloFree are excellent.
We had wonderful weather and really enjoyed the towns visited. Many of the roads between the towns are dirty with litter at the side of the roads which is unpleasant.
A very nice holiday. The items below are areas to address to make the holiday even better.
Accommodation variable - At three accommodations the showers only provided cold water or tepid water took over ten minutes to arrive. Night 1 - Agriturismo Il Melegrana (Palazzolo Acreide), San Gorgio hotel (Modica) and Ortigia Boutique Palace (Syracusa).
Other than the above issue with the showers, the accommodations were nice and breakfast / evening meals provided very good. Though a good warm shower after a days cycling is important.
The location of the arrival hotel is not appropriate for the following reasons:
1. It is too far out (over 4 km) from Palazzolo Acreide. Far too far to walk and not safe as no sidewalks and dark at 6.30pm. No local taxis available. We were able to hire an airport transfer bus for 60 Euros one way. The very kind people from CycleFree transported us to the town for free.
2. Palazzolo Acreide is a UNESCO World Heritage Location so groups beginning their tour from this accommodation are likely to miss out on visiting a beautiful hilltop town. See point above re no taxis being available and private transfer very expensive (If lucky enough to find one).
3. It reduces Day 1 cycle by over 10km from the advertised route whilst also missing out on option to visit Palazzolo Acreide on the day 1 cycle. REALLY DO NEED TO RECONSIDER THE ARRIVAL ACCOMMODATION. This is a shame as the family running the accommodation are very, very nice. However, it is just not suitable.
The Guibo App requires some improvements.
On day 4 the route into Portopalo di capo Passero is NOT GOOD. The Guibo route takes the bikes the wrong way down a one way street and through a pedestrian area (Via Vittoria Emanuele Secondo) which was dangerous. It would be much better to route the bikes on the cycle path which goes down to the waterfront (which would be both more scenic and safer). Likewise, much better to exit the town using Contrada Scalo Mandrie.
On day 6 - part of the route near the final beach area prior to cycling into Siracusa is completely unsuitable for cycling. It is very rocky and very likely to cause damage to the bikes. It is difficult to walk along far less cycle along. An elderly (both 80 years) Canadian couple with electric bikes we met up with really had difficulty in this area due to their electric bikes being so large and heavy.
