We had a very memorable week doing the Taste of Burgundy Tour and we had a great adventure but there is some room for improvement. Arjan and Daniella are a colourful couple who added plenty of interest to our trip. Our meals were of a very high standard when you consider they were cooked by Daniella in a small kitchen on a barge. Wine and beer was available on board at a most reasonable price. On the negative side, there was no opening window in our bathroom which meant we had to leave the door open to vent the bathroom after a shower. The bathroom did become very smelly by the end of the week, which may have been due to drainage or the fact that the toilet is flushed with canal water. On the first day when bikes were selected there was some difficulty getting a bike to fit all of us as there were a lot of short people on the trip. Francois did seem a bit flummoxed by this and it was only sorted when two of us swapped bikes. I’m not sure he would have had a solution if we had not done this. Francois was safety conscious and was a great leader out on the road however his local knowledge was disappointing when we got to the small towns. He basically left us to wander round on our own and as we got to most villages at lunchtime when everything was closed up, I think we missed some good opportunities. Our bikes were very comfortable but not in top condition - the front light on my bike was not working and the front tyre on my husband’s bike was worn. This is a safety concern in wet weather which we encountered on this trip. We were cycling on some busy roads at times and I think we should all have been provided with high visibility vests. The printed itinerary we were provided seemed to bear little relation to the distances travelled and this needs to be addressed. I think it was a surprise to many of us the distances we were travelling some days and that we were on open roads with heavy traffic. Cycling helmets should be compulsory, not strongly recommended. Overall we had a great time and I will be booking another cycling tour, just a few things that need improving.
