We had a very interesting tour on the MS Andante. The food and service were excellent and the accommodation clean and adequate. The crew were generally very helpful and accommodating. The hotel manager on the boat was extremely efficient but not really warm and friendly. He didn’t really want to engage with the passengers and we felt his interpersonal skills could be improved. The route was interesting but each day was quite long and we often didn’t get to spend enough time in the various attractions along the way. More time in Strasbourg, for example, would have been preferred. The holiday was most enjoyable but our only real complaint is about the poor maps and directions provided each day. Every day we made a mistake somewhere along the route where the map was incorrect or the directions inadequate. The descriptive books did not assist in this regard and need to be updated. We have been on two other tours and our cycle guide has always been along the route picking up anyone who was lost or slow; particularly in difficult areas. Often we didn’t see the cycle guide on the route and as the maps were inaccurate there were times where we ended up on busy, dangerous roads. We travelled with other passengers and often resorted to using the GPS to get us back to the boat. On the last day we chose the Heidelberg route – quite long and we were aware that the timings were tight. However, we were cautious and managed everything in good time until we reached the centre of Mannheim. The instructions and map were completely inadequate, the roads very complicated and the boat nearly left without us! This would have been a good example of the cycle guide choosing to meet everyone at a point to get us back to the boat easily. Incidentally, there was no cycle guide that day. The trip was great but the inadequate maps and directions really need improving. Understanding that this is a new tour it would have been wise to ask the cyclists for feedback each day – what was the route like? Where did you make a mistake? What was unclear? How can we change the map? Where would you like to spend more time? However, this was the sixth time the tour had been run so the maps could have been updated during the year.
