Excellent Cycling Tour Passau to Vienna
Our cycling trip from Passau to Vienna along the Danube ranks as one of our best vacations ever. Spectacular scenery, castles and cathedrals, and some friendly people helped make our trip a success. We booked the agrotour with Rad+Reisen, which was mostly satisfactory. We found a couple of the accommodations that were provided to fall quite short of the 3 star billing, although I would give all of our hosts a thumbs up for the cleanliness of their establishments, and their friendliness. For the most part, the breakfasts were good, and even excellent (IBB Passau, Das Capri Vienna). However, at one establishment the selection was minimal. Although we expected all of our hosts to speak English (as indicated in the tour description), we sometimes had difficulty communicating. We hope to learn to speak more German before our next trip! A couple of the locations were quite remote, making it difficult to get dinner in the evening. The bikes provided did the job. We were envious of the ebikes on the few climbs we had to make, and on the days when there was a strong headwind. The person at the bike rental shop in Passau made sure our bikes were properly sized and in good working condition. He also helpfully provided some tips for our tour. We were provided with rail tickets, which we did not use. The tickets from Krems to Tulln would have required us to backtrack 10+ km to use. And we did not know we could opt out of the train tickets for a cost savings until we received our travel documents. We used the ferry to traverse the river on several occasions. Perhaps more ferry crossing vouchers could be included? The directions in the cycling guide were very good, and it was helpful to read about the various towns and villages we passed through. The luggage transport proved reliable - our bags were waiting at our destination each afternoon. Overall we were satisfied+ with our experience with Rad+Reisen.
