Nick and Bernadette’s Cycle Holiday--Vienna-Budapest
It was a ride down memory lane for me. I did the same cycle tour in the early 1990s with Rad and Reisen as part of a UK journalists tour paid for by R&R to promote what was then a newly formed cycle holiday company. I had forgotten how beautiful the Danube is and the amazing cities and villages on the way. This time I was with my German girlfriend and both of us were charmed by the discovery of wine festivals and open air concerts in places like Gyor and, being tennis players, how easy it was to call up tennis clubs and rent racquets and a court for an hour in small villages and cities like Bratislava. Budapest is, as always a lively and stunning city and the Gellert Baths are unmissable.
Rad&Reisen provided a well organized tour, the hotels were generally very comfortable with the most special perhaps the Hotel Bow Garden in Komarno with its old bowling alleys and nearby thermal, open air, baths. The only hotel that perhaps was more boring than a disappointment was the Danubius Hotel Flamenco in Budapest. If I was to make any suggestions, they would be that it would be good if the hotels en route had bio food available (especially eggs, as I love eggs but cannot eat them anymore unless I know they are organic or bio); perhaps an App for travellers alerting them to festivals or other cultural events en route and finally a note that in Budapest, if you stay on the Buda side, be prepared for a few steep hills between the Danube and your hotel. But without doubt we would book again with R&R and Julia, our booker, was fantastic and a great help! Nick and Bernadette
