This was our second bike and boat tour with Rad & Reisen (the first being 4 years ago along the Danube from Passau to Budapest and return). This tour started in Mainz and ended in Cologne and was not difficult. Very flat rides next to the River with distances varying between 25 and 45 km per day. The boat (MV Arlene II) was very comfortable and the food and staff were excellent. On this trip you made and wrapped your own picnic lunch at breakfast. On our previous trip we did something similar however there was a staff member that wrapped our lunch and provided muesli bars, fruit and chocolate bars. Daily briefings were held at 9am (for English speakers) and were just a re-hash of the route notes provided in our books. There was little additional information eg. good places to stop for a coffee or drink or things to visit. It really wasn?t worth delaying the start to our cycling day to receive no additional information. On the previous trip the briefings were held the afternoon/night before so that we could head off early (if we wanted to) - that was a much better set up. We also received additional directional info and suggestions for places to stop to eat/drink/sight see. The other difference between this tour and the Danube one was that on this tour the boat stayed at the destination for the entire overnight. Therefore, you could arrive any time of day without fear of missing the boats departure. The disadvantage of this was that if you were a cyclist you never got to spend any time on the sun deck taking in the sights as the boat cruised down the river. The Danube trip provided a ?cruise? in the afternoon after your cycle to your next destination. The first three cycling days of this tour (Mainz to Koblenz) offered wonderful scenery however day 4 had nothing to view of note. Days 5 to Bonn and day 6 to Cologne were ok. A lot of the riding is next to the River or train line or highway so can be a little boring at times. There?s not a lot of going through small, quaint villages as we experience on our other tour. If we were to do this tour again we would do it in reverse and have the best scenery at the end of the tour. In saying all of the above we did have a very enjoyable holiday and would recommend the route.
