4,6 04.07.2015 | John F. Rhône Cycle path

John and Sophie, Geneva-Lyon June 21-26, 2015

We are two experienced cyclists who two years ago traveled the Donauweg with Eurocycle, between Passau and Vienna. We were very pleased with that trip. Directions, maps, rented bicycles, and hotels were all of a high standard and met our expectations. We were not so pleased with this trip, though the countryside was enjoyable and the people we met in the towns along the way were very nice and very helpful. The good and the bad are listed below: 1. The hotels were all very good and each had its own character. The hotel la mere Jacquet near Meximieux was especially enjoyable as it had a swimming pool which was greatly appreciated on a hot day. All the hotel restaurants were very good. The Axotel in Lyon had the best breakfast and accommodations, and is in an excellent location.2. We were not pleased with the rented bicycles. They were very heavy, making it difficult to climb even the gentle hills around Lake Geneva and other parts of the trip. In addition, the male bike was badly set up, with an improperly installed tube in the front wheel. This caused the tire wall to bulge and the wheel to bounce on the road. We were able to fix this at the Bos bike shop (rue Lyon) in Geneva, who very kindly reinstalled the tube at no charge. They also advised that there was no way we could ride those bikes to Seyssel, as they were too heavy for us. Thus, we took the train to Seyssel, Your directions should specifically advise rental customers of this point, as an average cyclist may get into trouble on the steep climbs. Another couple on the same trip with their own bikes (one electric!) confirmed the difficulty with the Seyssel ride. 3. The directions were of mixed quality: some were very accurate, while others were actually misleading. This may be due to bad translation. The part describing the trip between Vion and Verginin is obsolete, as there is a continuous bike path between the roundabout before Vion all the way to before Verginin. The maps were difficult to read at first, but were in fact accurate in describing the trip. We were fortunate that Sophie is French and could speak to local people to get good directions when we lost the way. The Via Rhona maps on the path were also very helpful.4. Our overall feeling is that the trip itself is very scenic and interesting, and goes through many small towns and villages in France. The Rhone river itself is the best part of the trip, as it changes in character so much along the way, from strongly flowing, to calm upstream of dams, to lake-like recreational areas. We saw a lot of Agriculture: corn, wheat, oats, sunflowers, and the farmers working the fields. The ride into Lyon was very scenic, along the Rhone, and is highly recommendable. Lyon itself is a city very worth visiting for its food, museums, and history.
