July 8 to 15 Bike and Barge on the Claire De Lune
We were happy overall with this trip, but we're not pleased with three aspects.
1. The trip was ranked 1-2 in difficulty, but the ride to Sancerre was definitely above a 2.
2. The places that we stopped for breaks were not well thought out. Some times we stopped for a short break in a town, and then a short time later stopped in the middle of nowhere for an extended break and lunch. Also, the lengths of the breaks did not seemed arbitrary. In towns where there were many points of interest we would sometimes take short breaks, but then take long breaks where there was not much to do.
3. We felt that the guide did a poor job of leading the group and keeping us on schedule. He was often not aware of things happening to riders behind. There was also a tendency of some riders to stop for extended periods to take pictures without telling the leader or those in front. Over the course of a day, this resulted in the rest of us stopping multiple times for 5 to 10 minutes at a time waiting for them to appear. Over the course of this week, this adds up to 2-3 hours. We felt that the guide should have emphasized to these guests that they were inconveniencing everyone else. As far as I know, he never addressed this with them.
The food was excellent. We enjoyed the trip.
