Salzkammergut and the Legend of Hallstatt

from/to Salzburg

Itinerary

Route

Country roads, cycling paths, field paths, terrain is hilly with some larger uphill stretches. Please be informed that there will be more traffic on country roads during the summer holidays.

Individual arrival in Salzburg. Check in at your hotel and receive your travel documents. Explore Salzburg on your own.

After picking up your bike (if you’ve booked a rental bike), your tour begins toward Eugendorf and Thalgau. On relaxed and quiet paths, you’ll reach Lake Mondsee, where you’ll cycle along the imposing Drachenwand – a striking rock formation that towers impressively over the lake. From the Scharflinghöhe, you’ll have a magnificent view of Lake Wolfgang. Enjoy the downhill to St. Gilgen and let the day end with a ship ride on the “Wolfgangsee”.

The bike path takes you along the crystal-clear Lake Wolfgangsee to the historic imperial town of Bad Ischl. Emperor Franz Joseph spent many summers here, and to this day, magnificent villas, historic buildings, and the distinctive flair of the monarchy shape the town’s character. You’ll then leisurely follow the course of the Traun River to reach the idyllically situated town of Bad Goisern, which delights visitors with its living traditions and warm hospitality.

You’ll cycle at a leisurely pace to Lake Hallstatt, enjoying impressive views of the Dachstein Glacier along the way. You’ll then take a boat to the world-famous town of Hallstatt, nestled between the lake and the mountains. It is part of the Hallstatt-Dachstein UNESCO World Heritage region. After visiting the World Heritage Museum, you’ll have time to soak up the town’s special atmosphere – perhaps while enjoying freshly caught fish right on the lakeshore. An ideal Austrian postcard perfect backdrop.

You’ll follow the course of the Traun River once again, passing through the imperial town of Bad Ischl, and soon reach the picturesque Traunsee. Along the shore, the route takes you through the historic town of Ebensee and the idyllic village of Traunkirchen with its impressive lakeside promenade. Your destination for the day is the charming ceramics town of Gmunden, whose landmark, the famous Ort Castle on a small island in Lake Traunsee, is one of the most beautiful photo opportunities in the Salzkammergut.

Today, one of the most varied stages of your cycling tour awaits you. Passing through the idyllic Aurach Valley, you’ll reach the turquoise-blue Attersee, whose unique landscape once inspired the painter Gustav Klimt to create numerous works. The route follows the lakeshore through Unterach before you follow the Seeache River to the picturesque Mondsee. Your destination for the day is the town of the same name, which invites you to linger with its imposing Baroque basilica, cozy alleys, and a lively lakeside promenade.

Through the gently rolling countryside of the Mondsee region and past the idyllic Irrsee, your final stage takes you through the charming Salzburg Lake District – a tranquil region with sparkling lakes, picturesque villages, and unspoiled nature. Finally, you’ll return to the Salzach Valley and follow the river back to Salzburg, where your delightful cycling tour through the most beautiful landscapes of the Salzkammergut comes to an atmospheric conclusion.
