Carinthian lakes roundtrip

The "Austrian Riviera" invites you...

Route

Tour profile/ Level 1-2:

This tour leads mostly on well laid out bicycle routes, often directly along the lakesides. The route is mainly flat, in a few stages slightly hilly. Tour also suitable for families with children aged 12 and over.

Day 1: Villach

Individual arrival. The silence of the mountains, the gentle shores of the crystal-clear lakes, nature purely - in the heart of Carinthia the region around Villach reflects this whole variety. Already the Romans as the possibly first bathers appreciated relaxation and rest in these thermal baths and even Paracelsus enjoyed the curative effect of the thermal springs.

Day 2: Villach - Lake Millstatt round trip - Millstatt/Seeboden, approx. 30 km + train ride

In the morning you take the train to Lendorf near Spittal a.d. Drau. From there you cycle on secondary roads to Lake Millstatt, which is completely surrounded by a cycle path. You will discover the untouched south shore without any roads where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake in many places. Along the northern shore you cycle, partly directly along the lake, to the capital of the region, Millstatt am See. Already the Austrian emperor spent his holidays here, and many elegant villas from this era are still preserved.

Day 3: Millstatt/Seeboden - Lake Weissensee - Hermagor/Lake Presegger See, approx 30 km + transfer and boat ride

In the morning, a shuttle bus takes you up to the lake Weißensee. From there, a boat will take you to the starting point of the bike tour. The trip starts with a short slope before turning downhill again along the dreamy Gitschtal valley, to the small town of Hermagor and then to Lake Pressegger.

Day 4: Hermagor/Lake Presegger - Lake Faaker See - Mühlbach/Rosegg, approx. 60 km

The tour starts at the Gailtal cycle path, one of Carinthia‘s most natural cycling routes. It leads through the Schütt nature reserve, formed by a landslide of the imposing Dobratsch mountain, and where the Gail River flows through wide gravel banks. From the Gailtal cycle path, turn off at Müllnern in the direction of lake Faaker See and continue along the southern shore of the lake. Then the path leads through small dreamy places to today‘s final destination.

Day 5: Mühlbach/Rosegg - Keutschacher Seental valley - Klagenfurt/surroundings, approx. 40 km

Today starts with a section along the Drau cycle path and then leads to the Keutschacher Seental cycle path. The trip starts with some slopes before turning downhill towards the valley along the 4 lakes through idyllic natural landscape and forest sections. Via the suburb of Viktring you return to the shore of lake Wörthersee and then cycle the last part to Klagenfurt along the Lendkanal, which connects the city center with the lake. Do not miss a leisurely evening stroll through the romantic old town, and experience the flair of this city up close.

Day 6: Klagenfurt/surroundings - Lake Woerthersee - Villach, approx. 45 km

The path leads you back to lake Wörthersee and then always along the north shore. The route runs continuously on bike paths and often directly along the lake, where you are free to stop for a cooling jump into the water. The bathing resorts along the lake are lively and have nice inviting sea promenades with many attractions for big and small cyclists. Leaving lake Wörthersee in a westerly direction you reach the Drava/Drau cycle path, the most famous bike path in Carinthia, which will bring you back to Villach. The relatively small city of Villach is perfect for little stroll in the centre.

Day 7: Villach - Lake Ossiacher See round trip - Villach, approx. 45 km

The Seebach leads you out of Villach and soon you will notice the castle ruin of Landskron, dominating the valley below. Surrounded by the idyllic mountain scenery, you will come across inviting bathing resorts and the romantic Ossiach monastery. The dark green colour of the lake water is really inviting to take a last bath before closing the roundtrip in Villach.

Day 8: Villach
